Erupted without any warning :yikes:
Saw it earlier on the news and they said at least 30 are believed to have been killed.

:yikes:

Usually Japan is pretty good at giving advance warnings especially at places like Mount Ontake. It's a fairly simple climb to the top and can get very busy.
I've climbed it myself although I never actually went right to the very summit.

Hope everyone will be OK
Beautiful and popular tourist spot

Seems like those who died asphyxiated due to the pyroclastic flow that followed the eruption. A bit like Pompeii.

Rescue teams searching Japan's Mount Ontake for missing climbers suspended operations as the volcano continued to shoot gas, rocks and ash into the air.

The ring of fire is very active at the moment, tectonic plate movement has increased dramatically over the last few months causing volcanoes to become active in many countries.
Earthquakes are increasing with over 60 small quakes in some areas along the ring.
Yellowstone and Mammoth Lakes are being monitored very closely due to the size of the calderas in these locations.

I hope Mono Lake doesn't go up in smoke, I love the onion rings from the café in Lee Vinning
