This makes me rather sad.

We should never have given the place back.

The mainlanders clearly never had any intention of honouring any agreements. This was the fear way before the handover. :NoNo:

While this is awful, how many people realise that Hong Kong was never a democracy? Under British rule it was governed by someone appointed, no voting.

We were in Hong Kong last weekend (on the way back from Manila), and we spent a few days sightseeing. It was a great place, but that was as a visitor and not a resident. I really wish I'd visited >10 years ago when it was under British rule (just like I wish I'd flown Concorde when I had the chance ... no point in reminiscing).
