Microsoft unveils Windows 10 system with Start Menu (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29431412)

Sounds decent enough. One OS for all devices is the way it should be. :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I have windows 8.1 on my laptop that I obtained , don't like it, never use the live tiles and prefer having it on desktop view and access all my stuff from there....

I will probably buy a tablet next as I only use my laptop for internet and to write the odd letter. Not like years ago when I bought a PC that had the top of the range everything and cost me £1500... It broke after two years! My laptop now is 3 years old and cost me £400, apart from the battery that loses charge and only lasts around 40 mins a charge... oh and the letters have worn off some of the keys! it has stood me in well.

If I get another laptop I am thinking of a touchscreen one. But like I say, probably a tablet next. But it has to have a connection to my old pc monitor as it is I think 18 inches which I use to watch my downloads on.

I still use XP on my virtual machine.
Sadly still using Windows vista on my laptop :cwm3:
I'll upgrade to Win10 as soon as I can. Hopefully via a new laptop :xxgrinning--00xx3:

:icon_lol: XP lasted what 13yrs, I doubt any other Windows o/s will.

I think '7' will be around for a while - unlike win 8 +

I remember way back the first Windows.
I didn't take much notice of it until windows 3.1 then I loved it.

I always liked 3.1

Windows XP was a great platform that some people are still happily using to this day. Windows 7 is by far my favorite OS from Microsoft, it's smooth, secure(ish), and I genrally have no problems using it.

Windows 8 and 8.1 however are horrific, it's clumsy, and makes simple tasks harder to to do which is the exact opposite of what an upgraded software should do. I ended up having to install a windows 7 emulator on my laptop just to make it usable. I have never used the tile screen once.

I can see what Microsoft were trying to do with a universal platform across different devices but the execution of the idea is terrible IMO.

Yes xp was great, but windows 7 if much better and I won't be moving from it in the near future. Very easy to get free validated copies these days too. Remember Graham no xp support now including security updates. Time to get windows 7.

I agree, although if Graham has had the same PC since 2003 I would imagine some hardware upgrades might be needed in order to run the newer OS well.

Windows 8 is fine when set up correctly, but as a dual system, it is a massive FAIL.

Oy Les ! :olddude:

Where can I get a free Windows 7 then mate ?

I have upgraded my PC to an extent.

Now have 2 gigs RAM, 3 hard drives, a new 650 watt power supply and a much better graphics card.

Wireless mouse and keyboard, connected to my big TV, hifi system, and wi-fi enabled.

Plus, converted it to the lightweight sports model (it has no front or sides on it now) .

First-time starter every morning, whatever the weather.

Ok if you pm me full address I can send you a copy for you to install. We will have to activate it but can do that once you installed it.it's best to do a new instalation (proper format) so if you need to save pics, docs and bookmarks do that in the meantime.

Win 7 64 bit has been great, the only problem is compatability.

My scanner won't work or my creative cam, but when I change my printer again it will be for an all in one to solve the scanner problem. With the cam I just use a tab instead.

The only crashes I get now are down to a graphics card problem..soon to be solved.

I liked Win 7, but now on Windows 8. I don't use it in windows 8 style apps etc, i prefer the desk top mode

That sounds interesting, I came from Vista to win 7.

So I should look for vista driver for my Epson scanner and creative cam and they will work with win 7 ?

Thanks, but they did not work, the work arounds were not very good. It seems to be more difficult cos I am using 64 bit software
