i studied in a chinese school when i was in grade school and high school.. im not really good with mandarin though but im pretty ok with fookien.. which is the chinese dialect widely spoken here in the Philippines.. chinese is the hardest language ever!!! and mandarin is the hardest dialect in chinese... not all chinese people know how to speak it.. only my dad in our family is the one really good at it.. you have to be really precise with your pronunciation or else it would mean something else..
im not really good with reading the chinese words in english letters though.. makes it hard for me to understand :Brick:

i have a lot of really REALLY good friends who are fookien :D

COOL!!! fookien is really easy to understand and speak...
argh one of my regrets in life.. i didnt really take it seriously before... im still not fluent til now.. although i am forced to speak it when im in divisoria and trying to haggle with chinese merchants there... you be surprised how much discount i get when i talk to them in chinese hehehe
why dont you also try to learn tagalog? be nice to converse with marivic in tagalog.. hehe i bet she be impressed.. :D my andy has this dream that we be doing the grocery in the uk and we be speaking in tagalog both him and i.. hehehe and im really proud of him bec he can sometimes understand now when i am talking to other people in tagalog... and hes really cute when he mispronounces the words :D

Hmm... interesting thread you started here, Tom

Mandarin is not a dialect - it's the official language of China, so tends to be rather widely spoken :BouncyHappy: The proper name for it is Putonghua - "The Common Language".

Yeah, you need to be precise when speaking it: Mandarin has 5 tones, and word-meanings change depending on the tone. But it's a beautiful language to hear, to speak, to read.

Cantonese, on the other hand... 9 tones? That scares me!
