Flexi-flats. Interesting idea. First I've heard of it.
The first tenants of a brand new development of flats in Stonehouse are set to move in at the end of this month.
Eleven ‘flexi-flats’ have been designed so that they can easily be adapted to suit people’s changing lifestyle needs, whilst future-proofing the properties owned by Two Rivers Housing.
Two Rivers has taken this innovative step in response to high demand for one-bedroom homes to rent at affordable prices.
Acutely aware of how trends can change, the housing association has taken a longer term view of people’s needs and designed a larger-than-average living space which, at between 57 m2 and 61m2, is roughly equivalent to the average private housebuilder’s two-bedroom flat.
This provides a generous living area while it remains a one-bedroom flat, yet allows sufficient space to divide it to create a smaller living area and a second bedroom with minimal disruption, if the need arises.
“Whilst there is huge general demand for new affordable homes of all sizes, we have a responsibility – as both a housing developer and long term custodian of these homes – to make sure their design and construction are flexible,” explained Garry King, Chief Executive of Two Rivers Housing.
“These are the first homes we have built in this way, responding to the need for one-bedroom homes for single people and couples in this particular area. We will definitely use this design in other new developments where we think it is important to retain this flexibility for both our tenants, and ourselves.”
The scheme is on the site of a former bakery, behind the High Street in Stonehouse. A total of 11 flats have been built over three floors, and six of these are built to the more generous flexi-one bedroom design. The remaining five are a standard one bedroom size.
The homes proved very popular when they were offered for rent, and all the flats have been let.
