View Full Version : Filipina Spotting

Train Spotting - My dad was crazy about trains so I became a train spotter as a kid. Quite interesting actually despite what people say.
Eddie Spotting - Not really my cup of tea.
Plane Spotting - I've never been interested in planes until taking regular long haul flights so I might take this hobby up one day.
Bird Spotting - I'm talking about the feathered type here . I've done this as well when I was younger. :xxgrinning--00xx3:
So what about Filipina Spotting? (nothing sordid intended btw)
Apart from the Barrio Fiesta's and hospitals, I rarely come across any I don't know in close proximity when out and about on foot, although I did strike up a conversation on a park bench with a Pinay from Cebu a couple of years ago. I also mistook a Thai lady for a Filipina and received a funny look when I said hello in Tagalog. :icon_lol::doh
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I was in a small town with a population of a few thousand. I entered a shop and was served by what I thought was a Filipina. Again I used Tagalog to say hello, and bingo, she was from Mindanao. Been back a few times and she always speaks to me. Very nice lady indeed. :xxgrinning--00xx3:
Do any of you guys, if you're out on your own in the UK, just out of interest, speak to what you think maybe a Filipina, if you see one?

Loads - and I mean LOADS - of Pinays in my neighbourhood, the European HQ for Iglesia ni Cristo is a stone's throw away. Big building, ram-packed with Pinays 2 days a week. I speak Visayan - which is helpful, as I encountered 2 very nice Pinays from Cebu in Poipet, Cambodia a couple of weeks ago. Spent a few days with them in Siem Reap. I bump into Pinays in the most unlikely of places.

I've spoken to a girl on a dating site who follows INC but as soon as I found out I took it no further.
I wonder, though, do INC followers mix with other Filipinas or do they keep to their own? If they're in a different country maybe there are non-INC in that area too. :Erm:

It's Sunbury on Thames (actually in the shadow of the M3 at Junction 1)

INC is Iglesia ni Cristo, but it could also stand for INCorporated, as it seems to be a business generating loads of cash. I recently rode a motorbike from Davao to Compostela valley and passed I think it was 7? of their churches all brand new and gleaming. I think they are gaining ground a bit like Quiboloy! :Erm:

Nope, it's the main European Office. I passed it yesterday. I'm sure its got 'European Main Office' on the outside of the building. I have just googled it, and the building is on their website as the European HQ. It's the only place locally you can see a couple of hundred Pinays going in or sitting eating across the road in KFC. It's like being back in Hong Kong on a Sunday in Statue Gardens! :icon_lol:

Similar behaviour, in many ways, here in Philippines from many ex-pats I run in to either on the street or supermarket.
Maybe they're too busy or just want to keep themselves to themselves. It just strikes me a bit odd. After all we have a number of things in common having travelled half way round the world to face a new culture and new environment.
I'd have thought that alone would generate a kind of common bond but it seems on occasion to be quite the opposite and it can feel like I'm invisible.
Maybe it's only me walking around with a permanent grin feeling so blessed to be here and wanting to share the bond.
The locals will always respond to a smile and a nod and even a few exchanged words of greeting.
Don't you give up Anne, it's their loss not yours.
Besides, you're better off avoiding those types.

Google European HQ Iglesia ni Cristo, that's the building in Sunbury, the BIG one. I can only go by speaking to people in there and seeing the building countless times itself. I'll pop in next time I am over there - probably tomorrow - and ask if it is the European main HQ.

Has she got family here Ded? Locally or further down? Plenty of Pinays around. Guildford has a healthy population, loads of them there shopping on a Saturday. I'll tell you where I saw dozens last time I was there - mostly nurses - as I chatted to a number: Gunwharf Quays down in Portsmouth. Loads in London as you know, in Earls Court - AKA Little Manila! :icon_lol:

Tawi - yeah, got her bruv & family over that way. We chatted to a few at the Gunwharf before Christmas - prime spending destination. As you know, there're loads around Kingston, Chertsey, Camberley, etc., with all the hospitals. Funny you should mention Earls Court, she came back last night with a haircut & bags full of Magic Sarap, Pan de Coco, Skyflakes & other essentials.

I passed the Iglesia ni Cristo HQ earlier. There were maybe 10-12 dark-suited Pinoys emerging from the main entrance as I waited at the lights. They always remind me of Pinoy Mafioso in those suits. I was surprised to see a white guy with them (also suited and booted). I think INC accept "foreigners" in their ranks, as I have also seen an African guy; looked Nigerian - certainly that part of West Africa - with a Pinay, going in once.

It's strange you mention that.
We have an INC church within a few minutes walk from our house. I recognise a few folks there and often wave and just a few polite words.
Anyway tonight I was just off to the market to buy some Marang when I got beckoned over by some familiar faces and invited to take a look around inside before the service began.
I didn't accept as I was rushing to get some decent Marang.
But they did say next time they would show me inside.
I told my wife and she said she was glad I didn't go in :xxparty-smiley-004:
I'm going to have to curb my curiosity and not get trapped into going inside somehow or other.

I have just been to a tapas bar in Twickenham for lunch with a mate. Pincho's - the one in Church Street - right next to the river. Few office bods came in from the local Council building, but when we were in the middle of our meal four pinays came in and were seated. Loads of them around. I normally don't even notice them anymore.

Cheltenham's expensive. I had a bacon roll today and it set me back £3.50 and it wasn't even freshly made. The service was good though and I was served by an oriental girl who at first I thought could have been Filipina but on closer inspection her eyes were different. I asked her anyway and it did start off an interesting conversation. She turned out to be the first Mongolian I've met.
