Window bars

Window bars, do you need them on every window, upstairs too, and what are the measurements between the bars??? Have they got to be fixed outside or inside or is it all down to each of us to decide?

I have been looking at different designs but they all seem too big. What about shutters?? Like they have in France.

Also, for a safety factor, what about getting yourself out of say a burning house and you cannot use the doors? If each window is fitted with bars, you are cooked! Just a thought.

Why can't one use double glazing? Quite a number of foreigners and professional Filipinos in Dumaguete use it; indeed Maritess sister and her husband have got beautiful tinted glass sliding doors leading out to their garden - no bars at all. I wouldn't want bars on my windows! :xxgrinning--00xx3:

Yes they do Steve.. I have always resisted attempts to make our building look like a prison.
I remember a few newspaper stories of whole families living in large wooden Spanish style houses in Manila burning to death because of those caged windows.
About the only option for safety I can think of is have them on hinges that swing open.. When closed they can be padlocked.. The padlock key would probably have to be hung from a hook on the wall near the window on the inside.

Are these window bars to stop people breaking in or to stop people removing items :Erm:

I would imagine these bars are not so good if you get caught inside with a raging fire or some deranged maniac chasing you with a knife

When we lived in Manila, we had window bars and, in my opinion, they are awful but they were needed.

When we moved out into the province, we built with just double glazed sliders and it was so much nicer...
