Did any members ever have one as a child? I've just found loads of lovely Gollywogs and Gollywog books on Amazon, they are really cute. When I was a child I had a Gollywog and I think most kids had one as they were for both boys and girls, don't know why some people consider them racist because in my day we never had any reason for racist thoughts because we had never seen a coloured person until later in life and even then we never connected Gollywogs to them! :xxgrinning--00xx3:

I too was only persuaded that there might be any connection between a gollywog and people when the PC brigade 'told me I should.'

Had the lot as a kid, gollywog dolls, even a gollywog chair.
No such thing as gollywog being a racist term back then.
In the 60's (and the mods may want to censor this) my mum had a cat called Nigger. Not too sure how offensive tbe use of the word was back then, but remember my grandad telling me a story of how one day they had a gas man come to read the meter under the stairs... He was out at the time but my mum let him in. So when my grandad returned my mum told him that the gasman was there. At this point the cat went under the stairs... So my grandad shouts out..... NIGGER, NIGGER, get out from under the stairs. At this point tbe gas man came out and in a very deep Jamacian accent said, I'm sorry Sir, your daughter said it was ok.
Apparently he read the meter for a good few years after that and they became good friends.

It's not racist as it's not directed at anyone just a comment on times gone by. Try listening to Oliver's Army

I wonder who was offended by things that has been around for years or was it a i will sue you thing that has stopped most of the things that many grew up with

My (Filipina) ex-wife was called a 'Paki' by some kids one day, when she was pushing our baby son in his pram.
It upset her..and me.
Shortly after my son started school he started to be racially teased by some of the other kids.
I marched straight down to the school and delivered some harsh words I can tell you.
Sorted.

My niece who is now in her 30’s was physically and verbally abused by a select few for looking like a Paki.
Was quite a traumatic time for her and our family, as the school couldn’t/wouldn’t do anything to discipline her attackers.
Her father was half Indonesian/Maori and sadly died when she was 2 years old. The abuse started in 2nd year high school and seemed to be brought about by jealousy, as she did well academically. Fortunately her Maori genes went into overdrive, by the end of the school year and the bullies disappeared before they felt her wrath. The sad thing is it seemed to affect her academically from then onwards
My kids, have never complained of being racially abused here in the Philippines and they have been through the school system from start to finish.

I cant remember when the time started that some children in our school were different, ok their skin and hair was different to most others, but we were all kids growing up together,
I think once you went home and your elders knew you were mixing with these people they was the ones who started to make silly words about your new friends, the end of innocence had begun

I had several gollywogs as a child and still have a gollywog garden
ornament [which my neighbour hates]. I also still have 3 jars of Robertson's mincemeat with the paper gollywogs on the back.
Can anybody remember how many paper gollywogs you needed to get a metal one?

That is a shame Jake. Poor girl. :NoNo:
Apart from that early incident with my son, he and my two stepchildren (one half African-American and the other pure Filipina) have not as far as I'm aware experienced any racial prejudice here in England. In fact they all did really well at school and uni' , always being very popular and having large groups of 'faithful' friends to this day...going by their facebook pages.

Talking of racism, when my partner lived on the Wirral she had 5 years of hell with racist vile scumbags. She worked nights in the hospital and in the daytime kids would kick the door & bang on the
windows, throw stones on the roof trying too break the tiles, when it rained they would throw mud at the windows etc .the verball abuse she got was vile filthy language every time they saw her,
when reported to the police they said nothing we can do parents not
interested.
Thank God she got a transfer to Wales 1 year ago, shes moved to heaven from hell.
