Dual Citizenship Advice

Myself and my wife were having a conversation regarding when the time comes is it better for her to to reapply for her Philipine citizenship when she becomes British or just to be British only also if dual national is the best way to go should she also hold both passports.

The reason I am asking is that if she held dual nationally and something we're to happen if she was in the Philippines then I believe the British embassy would not offer assistance.

Any suggestions or advice very much appreciated, thanks guys...:wink:

They offer precious little assistance to British Citizens. Period.

Depending on circumstances, there are advantages in dual citizenship.

I think if you are planning to acquire properties or land in the Philippines in the future, a natural born Filipino who acquired a foreign citizenship will have limitations.

Those were the main reasons for us to secure dual citizenship for my wife.
She really needed to strengthen her position with land and property.

We're still continuing to secure properies close to us as future income streams/assets.

For us, living here for any length of time means developing local income security instead of being totally reliant of the increasing vagaries of currency exchange rates.

I can't seem to find anything mentioning dual citizenship though, it only refers to those that have given up their Philippine citizenship :Erm:

Dual citizenship.......... carry on as before with no restrictions to buying land or property.

A Philippine citizen who has given up their citizenship may still buy land or property but you are restricted to 1000 square meters for urban land or 1 hectare for rural land, this increases to 5000 square meters and 3 hectares respectively if you're going to use the land for business or investment purposes.

There are absolutely no downsides IMO.. The Home office will have no clue about their dual Cit status anyway.

I am dual citizen Filipino / British
A week after I received my British Passport I applied for my dual citizenship for no other reason other than I am a Filipino ..I wasn't contemplating about the advantage or disadvantages , as I am sure they are many and varied.
The simple fact is I am Filipino , I am entitled to dual citizenship because of my governments agreement therefore it is my entitlement to hold two passports for which I feel very proud and lucky.

I have had dual UK and Irish nationality (both countries allow it) for about five years I have allowed my UK passport to lapse. I have no intention at the moment of ever renewing it:

Some countries, Spain for one, will not normally allow dual nationality, although Filipinos (being a former colony) who obtain Spanish nationally are allowed to retain their Filipino one.

There's no form for dual citizenship. When your wife gets a British citizenship, she has to apply for reacquisition of her Philippines citizenship. Just go to the Philippine Embassy UK site (although it's currently down) for the reacquisition form.

Technically, when you get a new nationality, the other one is automatically renounced. You have to reacquire the PH Nationality if you want to have dual nationalities.

OK thanks for that. When I took up Irish Nationality, my UK nationality was not affected so I did not need to do anything to retain it.
