Philippines bracing itself for long battle against haze

Lot's of locals asking me if I'm OK with 'the haze' couldn't quite understand what they were talking about even as they pointed up to the sky. I'd keep looking but could quite get the meaning.

Recently I've seen it on the local news and today also on BBC World news.

Basically it's from forest fires in Indonesia. Sadly the result of illegal slash-and-burn land cleaning practices.
It's impacting huge areas even now here in Philippines and also here in Mindanao.

Apart from potential health hazards to vulnerable people, there's also disruption to air traffic

Apparently,they are not burning virgin forest but older Palm oil plantations...Seems its the quickest/cheapest way to replant their money crops..
The western consumer agencies know all about this but its not in their financial interests to have this news in the papers!!
Mean while the Barangay tell me Im not allowed to burn a few leaves as it is bad for our planet!

When I lived in India there was always a smell of Sandalwood from the many fires used for cooking.

They always used to burn the stubble in the UK after harvest, puts carbon back in the soil.

The haze was there when I was in Cebu recently.

It started to get better the last few days before we left.

It was in all the newspapers.

Don't know about Manila and other areas though.
