http://www.wolvestuc.org.uk/index.php/history-of-wbdtuc/742-norman-brackenridge Norman saved lives as a Firefighter, served his union the FBU for many years organising, developing cadres, defending members and fighting for equality and for the service. He was active both regionally and nationally.

He was an active delegate of the FBU to Wolverhampton, Bilston & District Trades Union Council for over 40 years and served many years on the Executive Committee. Norman attended our meeting the night before he died.

Norman would always be on demonstrations and supporting our activities. He leafleted each election for the Labour Party and for our anti-fascist campaigns.
He served on the Midlands TUC and its Executive and had been Secretary of the County Association of Trades Union councils.

Norman was known for his solidarity actions in support of workers in dispute, joining picket lines all over the country. He made so many trade union friends miners, dockers, electricians and from so many other unions.

He involved himself in a lot of charity work, which many did not know about and turned down the offer of an MBE.
He was super-fit and an active rambler here and abroad.

Norman was a Communist and a true internationalist and invariably when we had international visitors he could chat about their country in some detail as he’d have visited it in his time as a seaman.

Since retirement he has made solidarity missions; driving a fire appliance to Iraq and many trips to areas of disaster to undertake rebuilding work including Haiti and many times to the Philippines.

We will all cherish the times we spent in Norman’s company, he always had an interesting story and good advice; his politics were spot on and he lived his life as a true socialist.
