I don't really understand the class system in this country,working-class,upper working-class if that exists, lower middle-class...etc....etc....etc its not like we are Indians with a strict rigid caste system, but in a country where nurses which I always thought of as a middle-class job are using food banks according to the media how do we,the hoi-polloi plebians, know our class?i saw steve described as middle-class,i always thought he was working-class,or is that upper-working class? How do you define your class/status,is it the number of pairs of trainers you have? The car you drive? The number of houses you own?:cwm25:

Well I have my own thoughts on this.
It's how other people see you and want to class you.
I was brought up in a family of 15.
Never much to go around but we never went hungry.
Paper rounds , milk rounds even rag and boning I did to make money.
I have done well through hard work but I am still Steve from a family of 15 never forgetting where I came from.
So what class is that , can anyone tell me

I never subscribe to the class strata,i was brought up in a real slum,a girl at school asked where I lived once, when I told her she said you live in a slum,i was embarrassed :icon_lol: now I live in surrey and she is still in sunderland  I always wanted to meet her again and ask her where SHE lives :laugher: but what buys you your niche in the class system, money?

It's funny how others see people, don't get me wrong I know I am not everyone's cup of tea because I don't pander to everyone, is that a good thing, in my eyes yes.

Hmm, :cwm25: ... it's a difficult one! But, for what it's worth, I believe a lot depends on a person's upbringing - adhering to standards of good, common decency and proper manners that he/she is taught during his/her formative years - rather than, for example, their position in society, or how affluent they happen to be ... :anerikke: ... if that makes sense.

... perhaps an adequate sufficiency, yes. But "manners maketh the man" is, in my humble opinion, more often a far, far better guide to one's true character :poke: ... bearing in mind, financial wealth, per se, rarely brings real happiness.

End of the day we are who we are, yes some may have had nothing but have made millions and some have had millions and lost the lot.
Be happy with what you have dont be jealous of what others may have , are they as happy as you are .
I bet many of us have done well from where we came from, and being brought up with very little it makes you realize that you dont need much to be happy, but its nice not to worry where the money is coming from to pay the bills.

Right Class, yes it was me that mentioned that, personally i would define Steve as "middle class" from what i gather he has a management job, Owns his own House, drives an old Knacker like me, and from what i gather from his posts aint short of a bob or two. Now i have today been talking to an old school friend of mine who i rarely see. We asked about where various people were these days, he mentioned a guy of our age Bracket who has gone totally the opposite way to Steve, his family owned property an Indoor Market which had about 30 stalls on it, and was thriving back in the day, and owned a large Plot of land which they rented to Fairground people, plus they owned, and ran there own Bicycle/Sports shop in a prime position in the Town, and of course had there own House in a nice area. We regarded this chap as a spoilt brat who never wanted for anything, and always wanted things his own way, except when i dropped him from the football Team. He was a Drummer in his own Band mostly because he had money, and picked and chose who he wanted in the Band.
Nowadays he lives in a Council house in the roughest part of the Town, and hasnt worked for the last 10 years when he was a Window Cleaner, nothing wrong with being a Window Cleaner Iv done a bit of that myself in my time, basically there isnt any lower for him to go.
Me, i was born to a single parent family when to be a bar steward was frowned upon  we didnt have any electricity, but we had a Brewhouse across the yard where we had a Boiler with a fire underneath which we used on Washing Day usually a Monday  and the obligatory outside toilet, the street lights were Gas lights, and our street was cobbled. Many a time when we didnt have any money i raided the dustbins of a local shop, to find any dented Tins of food which they had thrown out, or walked the nearby Railway line to find coal from the Trains so that we could have a fire. That to me then was the haves and have nots.

Nowadays i dont own a property. That went when i got divorced she had a cut from the property, i got the remaining Mortgage to pay off, having given her most of my savings (her share) rather than sell the house, eventually a partner (not live in) of mine paid off the Mortgage with the proviso that if we eventually sold the house we would split any profits.. it was sold when i went to the Philippines early last year im still waiting for my share. This brings me to where i am now living in a rented apartment, and about to become officially retired later this month.
Now make up your own minds about what class is, i know for sure i was born to the lowest having had no food on the table at times, at other times barely had clothes on my back, i know my old school friend was far better off than me, and always liked the best things in life, but one things for sure no matter what class we are, we all piss in a similar pot..
Sometimes things are beyond our control, life is decided by decisions that we make, sometimes its dictated to by the timing of things. Should i have stayed in an unhappy, and dangerous marriage for the sake of having a comfortable life with our own house, despite the fact that i was the only earner and the 4 of us smoked ? No i just wished i had done it years earlier, which is what i meant by timings.
I think Class nowadays is probably best described as what income Bracket we are in, but there are still people born to money who speak properly, write correctly who have come down for whatever reason, and there are people like Steve, and me who have our own class and dont give a Toss what other people think, except our nearest and dearest, and really thats all that matters in Life.. amen.

I seem to have worked my way down to working class (retired).

My parents and siblings I'd describe as middle class. All went to grammar/boarding school, (including myself), and most have degrees. All own their own homes. All have a good standard of living and good jobs.... except me. :cwm25:

I am sure there are still lots of people in some sort of marriage or just living together, just for the sake of not being alone.
May not be dangerous but name calling and taking all your money of you to live the lives that the other person may want and not wanting what you are wanting, but hey they dont have to stop there , but maybe to old or set in there ways to realize it.
We all live and learn, well most of us do anyway.
