Arguably most familiar to TV viewers for playing Siegfried Farnon, senior partner in the BBC's popular, long~running series, All Creatures Great And Small - based [loosely] on the books by real life veterinary surgeon, James Herriot, and set in the fictional North Riding of Yorkshire village of Darrowby.
But there was much more to the distinguished 91-year-old, whose voice :cwm25: - coupled with his commanding stage presence (including Shakespearean roles) during a career spanning eight decades - marked him out as one of :Britain:'s truly versatile actors.
