To Mall or not to Mall

Here in the Philippines (and somebody please correct me if I am wrong) there are 2 main shopping malls (or shopping centres as I call them) - namely, Robinson's and SM (Which apparently stands for Shoe Mart for some odd reason.)

Here in my temporarily adopted city of Dumaguete there are strong plans afoot for a brand new Robinson's mall. It has been a 'plan' for ages now by all accounts - and lo and behold - the other week, a blue bulldozer appeared on site and seemed to move a bit of earth!!!

However, until recently, I belonged to a Dumaguete forum and one particular thread on there is all about the proposed Robinson's Mall.

Still happy? OK - I shall continue................

There are so many 'fors' 'againsts' arguments and personal insults going on in this particular thread - 'shopping malls are good' 'shopping malls are bad' etc....

So, I was just sitting here on this fine, balmy evening, manicuring my teeth as I do on every Saint Madrigal's Day - and I thought - 'I wonder how many grains of sand there are on Earth?'

Well, as my calculator only has nine digit spaces on it - and it needs a new battery - I thought '...... it!!!!!'

So, ladies and gentlefolk, I have come up with another question - excuse me a second - phone..........................

It was Hanna.................she is currently 6.5 miles away.........

I digress.......

The question is thus - this is the serious bit now..........

Do you think that shopping Centres - i.e. Lakeside, Bluewater, Trafford Centre, Meadowhall, Metro Centre.........are a good thing or bad?

Could you live without them? (Ooops! Sorry, that is 2 questions)

Do you think they have a positive or negative effect on society and the environment as a whole? (Hmmmm! Seem to be going overboard on questions here but I'm sure you get my gist.)

I think you're under the influence of beer while making these thread hahaha so funny,but my answer is not much at all cause id rather got choose the bluewater,lakeside and greenery views rather than malls, also pitty for those small shop business as that monster mall sure thing can beat those....oppsss just my own opinion prof....

Benefits of malls?
-employment for many
-a place to go when the sun is raging hot :D (a cool place to stay)
-a place to find time shopping ...yipeee!!! :icon_lol:

I would be in favour of having them for reasons that have been said like employment for many and also like that i can spend an hour or so looking around and buying some food from back home..

PS i think SM means "Supermall"

SM is short for shoe mart.....coz it was just a small shoe mart before when founded by Henry Sy Sr in 1958 and now it grew into a citimall.

I don't think large malls are bad per se but it is nice to have the option to go to a mall or to visit a small grocery store if one likes.

I like the variety of malls but sometimes, for specialist produce and a personal chat I go to 'local' stores.

I totally disagree with shopping malls. You actually make rich more richer than they are already.
I would push more to develop streets with nice artisan shops, delicatessens and local fashion stores.
Create a nice Plaza with cinemas, bars and bistrot.
A European lifestyle tailored for locals. :)

OMG,

this threads contagious, its spreading from Dumaguete, to the UK.

Small city's like Dumaguete are not ready for malls, still developing,
infrastructure, pollution, etc. Al do I sound like yabs.LOL

Don't like shops full stop, so I hate malls.

I think I agree. It's good to have choice.

We shall never stop the rich getting richer (Isn't that right Keith?:D) - and of course, there is the employment issue.

malls are good you can buy everything and anything you like but during holiday season or weekends malls lots of people traffic inside and outside pain in the*ss:Brick::ARsurrender::bigcry::Brick::Brick so at times i prefer small shops where you can buy specific things.:xxgrinning--00xx3:
basically malls and small shops are good depends on what u gonna buy and what u prefer.

Small shops can distribute benessere to every local people. It should be encouraged not only by the gov but by everyone.

Take for example the Admin, he will distribute his wealth to all his favorite members...:D Isn't he merciful?
