Is the only option a long term (10 year?) visitor's visa, or is there another possibility?

What I would really like is to obtain a UK passport for Ruby (is this possible?), otherwise we will always be joining different queues at the immigration desks (our children coming with me).

Iain.
You can request a 10 year visitor visa (question 6.11 of VAF1) though it's up to the ECO whether they will actually issue you a visa for that length of time.
