It's supposedly rude, to ask a lady her age. Saves her from embarrassment.
...As for me, you can see I'm an old git!, as you can see my age...ha! ha!

I always think it's best to say, " how old are you, if you don't mind me asking". That way people don't feel obliged to answer.

Im proud to tell somebody my real age if asked...Its not the age the problem, its how someone brings herself/himself on the present age, physically and mentally.

likewise to say " she is fat" . If in the Phils, when you say to someone she looks fat or put on weight, means its abundant or means having a good like, while in the west when you say, she`s fat means negative.

English man: I am terribly sorry to ask my dear, but might I know your age? English woman: How dare you ask such a personal question! Where are your manners?! Where you raised by gorilla's? English man: I'm awfully sorry my dear, what I meant to say is your fat, ugly and you smell!...........

The real answer as to why it is rude to ask someone's age stems from many years ago. If someone was literate and educated then they should know their age. However many people were not educated and did not know their age because they could not count properly or read any record they did have showing their age. Thus it was embarrassing for them and therefore made rude by default because it was seen as a way to humiliate the iliterate uneducated person.
I however have noticed that pinoy's (and their family, especially when meeting for the first time) ask many questions which in this country we would find too personal a question to answer. I personally dont have a problem with being asked these questions, but it was a cultural shock at first.

Boring I now but you asked..........

If you wait long enough, you will normally get pensioners volunteering their age.

How many times have you heard 'I'm 83 you know' when you have been waiting for a bus?
