    Bar girls & STI/STD/HIV/AIDS

A friend of mine is seeing a really nice filipino girl and they hope to stay togehter.

There is only one problemmthat he is having trouble dealing with.

An ex boyfriend of the girl cheated on her with a bar girl and he's concerned about STI's, STD's, HIV and AIDS. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether he is at risk because of this?

Also what would be the reaction if the person and they both should get tested for STI's and HIV?

having watched 'selling sex in heaven' about the Philippine sex trade on the cbc channel.

some places check bar girls regularly, using smear tests but are rarely tested for HIV.

most shocking is the final option for some girls are the 'casas' used by the local Filipino men, where the girls are locked in a small room, a guard stands outside and lets in customers every 15 mins.

i think the girl will not like being asked to go to a clinic to test her, so maybe your friend can buy HIV and other testing kits online, and take them to the phils where both of them can be tested if you don't want to go to a clinic...

It's difficult for my friend because he's really worried, but he's only in the position because he found out that the girl's ex cheated on her with bar girls.

Sorry if I sound cynical but how the gf might have become infected is really irrelevant: it might be true about a former boy friend or she may have been sleeping around or even may have been a bar girl.

The situation now is that both parties need to be tested. That is the only way to know if they have a problem or not. I really don’t see what the dilemma is.

Test her & yourself, then you both have to go through it together

I'm sure she would want to know if she has caught anything from her ex, as much as your friend wants to know if this girl has caught anything

get the test done, better be safe than sorry latter

I think the only dilemma is how the gf will take it. He would not ask her to take the test on his own he would also be tested.

But how would you ask gf about such a thing?

Thank you for all the replies.

I think he will want to test both himself and the gf.

But how does he go about asking the gf on this?

How old is the girl ?

I assume she does not have a regular smear test, maybe she has never had a smear test.
She should have a regular smear test, he could put this to her. Its not only for sexually transmitted disease but also for her general well being, tell her that it is normal here for women to have these test for there health and to identify problems early, in order to treat them before they become life threatening, he does not even have to mention any concerns about diseases. Has he been tested and identified an infection ? He should go independently anyway.

A few years ago, i was told by the local doctor that it takes about 6 months after infection to detect the virus. You may get a false negative result before that. Its worth calling the NHS to find out the latest methods and accuracy of results.

    Best Wishes,

the girls are locked in a small room, a guard stands outside and lets in customers every 15 mins.
It must get quite crowded in there after a while!

One of our friends is an ex-bar girl, and is now married to an American. He had to pay the bar owner in order to take her out of the bar!

On the old and now well defunct ASAWA website, there were several instances of yanks marrying bar girls or GRO's......

As I remember quite a few of those relationships failed, mainly because of the girls missing the life, and not really wanting to settle down....

I am in no doubt that many of the girls do that job because there is nothing else available for them in terms of being able to help their families.
And it is a very sad situation indeed.

Even sadder is the thought that some of the bars in Cebu are frequented by westerners through pre-arranged tours....

A certain yankee name, that used to organize such tours, comes to mind.....

Don't know if the ex has been tested, don't care about him really the way he treated her.

Smear test will not pick up HIV / AIDS I believe which is the main concern.

There are so many good points here, all leading to the same thing. There is no doubt that the girl should be tested but and here controversial bit, so should the guy. Here's why: Anyone who has ever been sexually active with anyone who has had any partner other than themself, can be at risk from infection. And remember that symptoms are often subclinical - meaning that it is very possible that someone may not be aware or even show signs of infection. Chlamydia is the main cause of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and also tubal infertility and 99% of those with it do not know until the infection manifests into a chronic condition.

Getting back to the specifics of this case the guy should introduce the merits of them both being tested intelligently. If he does it well and she is responsible it need not be an issue at all. Ensuring the health or your partner is a blessing and both in a loving relationship should want to do that in my opinion. As has been said already, finding out is something she should surely want to do so that she can take any appropriate action to maintain her own health.

    Good luck!
Be responsible with little so that you can be trusted with much!!

A smear test could be a starting point, then your friend could put other testing forward for both of them.....
