Wink Wireless internet acess in Phils?????

    Hi guys.

I may have posted a similar thread a while back, but can't seem to locate it now.
My gf lives in Cagayan De Oro City, and I want to buy her a Cellular USB device in order for her to access the internet, so we can chat on line more often

I have seen various pre pay monthly options, but am calling now on peoples local experiences with regards to the most cost effective way about this please?
    Service providers/packages for example?

Any pointers would be great please?

    Many thanks in advance.

    Philip....

Maybe best firstly to get someone with a gprs/3g phone (phills always seem to have flash phones) to see what the strength of the signal is like in the house.

On my experience of USB modems in the UK in various locations all over the place.

I do know the software on many of the USb modems works ok but best to use the full version of the connect software makes a big big difference in upload and download speed also and often more important it makes them more stable. Usb as many know from when many landline adsl modem had usb connections they do tend to drop off.

Another trick i know some field workers use is they keep a powered hub in between the modem and laptop so if they in a customers location they use the hub which seems to help things.

Also if possible its worth investigating what modem they supply and seeing if its worth buying a better modem possibly with an external connector or at least a permantly attached decent aerial i know some people i know use devices with connectable external aerials in remote areas and it makes a massive improvement to signal and over time to battery life.
Bandrich seem to be one maker with some decent models. With extendable aerials.
As you may well know be aware the upload speed is the weak point and I would expect many using these devices would be using Voip. So if you plan the same what others experience will tell you if worth the expense.

One good thing as its phill all you need is a now standard dual band device.

As your in that field i dont wanna teach you how to suck eggs.

I cant even point to cdo on a map so no local knowledge here.

You could always use the cheap option. An 802.11 device (Wi-Fi), and visit Jolibee. My Nokia N82 phone works fine. An Asus EeePC is another option - I haven't tried ours in Jolibee yet, but it works fine on my home network.

I done the same at a Burger king a few years back in a local town.

Very handy for emails and short term browsing but a touch bad for the waist line if there for a long call.

A smartphone maybe a better option if using msn or yahoo depending on the data deal you can get on your mobile.

But i have to say generally the usb modems will get a better data signal than a mobile in most cases at least in the UK from my experience. Even this week i got a one bar gprs signal on my modem in a basement when my phones gprs had dissapeared

Also as well as a modem depending the data deal you get many newer phones can be used as modems as well.

    No mate, is ok.
Good to see someone with experience also in this field.
With regards to battery life, you are correct, coz if the downlink signal is better, the cellular radio transmits at a lower power level, thus saving on battery life.
    Nice reply mate.

Hmmm ... I've just got a result of 549kb/s up and 286kb/s down. Unfortunately, what this doesn't show is the dreadful latency and high packet loss which occurs on overseas traffic. International traffic appears to get routed through HongKong and the problem seems to occur between Phils and HK.

Thanks for the reply Keith, but a landline is not available in her area according to her, as crazy as it sounds.
    Thanks for the help anyway.

Not at all crazy! There are many parts of Phils which are just not reachable by landline. Other areas, they will install only if a minimum number of subscribers commit.

As well as getting it installed its getting repairs done if required from what I have seen.

Hopefully they have improved or have better training than the staff in the laguna area a few years back it was a nightmare to get details and people who could arrange the service when it first came out.
Then with the fixed aerial service arranging installation, payments and repairs seemed to be worse than anything the GPO or BT could cook up in the days of old
