So can others confirm that if your loved one has very little money and or also unemployed that you have next to no chance of being successful in your visa application, and when applying for a fiancee Visa does anyone know if financial status applies there?

Money and employment of the applicant are only two of the factors that are considered. They can help, but people do get visas granted without them (and people with them do get refused...).

You've got very little to lose by applying for a visitor visa (apart from ~£65 and a bit of time...) though be prepared for it to be refused.

Joint financial status applies when applying for a fiancee visa - if you have enough money to support the pair of you in the UK for at least 6 months then your fiancee's financial status is irrelevant.

Visitor visa is a bit of a lottery, some people have got one with little money or no job, while many have been refused who had money, property and a job..

but most are refused with the classic excuse ' i am not satisfied that you have demonstrated, on the balance of probabilities, sufficiently strong family, social or economic ties to satisfy me that you intend to leave the United Kingdom on completion of your visit'

Thanks for the advice guys, I was gonna start my own thread originally to ask for advice, but came across this one before i got around to it, and it seemed to parallel my situation in some ways. Think I will leave the Visitor Visa for now, as I wasn't very hopeful before seeing this thread, and am even less now!
The other alternative is I leave England and live here, so might be interesting to hear from others that have made that choice, and how they have found it!

I love it here ... almost 14 months now.
