Best to speak to people who live in the same area as you using the same service.
Are you near a major road/railway/carpark/ resturants/cafes college/uni or workplace
as many people use 3g now on phones and with laptops etc this can affect your signal.
If you have your own laptop and 3g widget/dongle then your pretty safe from people around you detecting what you doing.
If you have a wireless router plugged into the phone system it depends on the encryption system you use and avaiable, dont use wep its easily cracked wpa is ok.
Some really devious person could hack into the router but unlikely.
But do be careful of shared connections if one of the others carried out ilegal actvity then depending on the circumstances you may have some proving its not you. Also if others download lots they may use up the monthly usage or use it when you want to making the connection sometimes slower.
Also with any contracts worth looking into the future as some quite long and depends on how long your flat share is.Also whose name is it in who pays etc.
