    I have been ripped off....

Like many others I have tried Internet dating and like many others encountered scams, some childish, some a bit sophisticated.... I don't need to repeat the golden rule: a decent and reliable person will never ask for money! If I can give a piece of advice based on my personal experience and judgment (I have been working with law enforcement for nearly three decades and encountered hundreds of crooks in my career..), if you have doubts on the person or just want to make sure she is sincere, use her phone, call her unexpectedly (mind the time difference of course!), use snail mail to be sure her address indeed exists and in some cases Google can be a very efficient detective. My GF introduced herself to me as a recently graduated licensed nurse and this was indeed confirmed by the governmental listings you can access to through Google. Just an example..

Now, as far as the scams are concerned: "my sister wants to sell our computer, and if I can't access a computer how can we communicate Honey?"..... I did not respond. One week later: "my eldest sister died, we need 10.000 Pesos for the funerals". That time I received photos of a funeral with people nearby a coffin, the whole family sobbing in the church, etc.... I sent the 10.000 Pesos. There was one chance out a billion that the story was true... one week later, I got a message about a Social Security check she could not cash because she had no bank account.... I did not respond and in the end she quit. Good luck!

More recently another one wrote me that because a cousin had forgotten something on the stove the whole house had burnt down.... I sent some money again and after she told me that if I was good enough to "lend" 50.000 Pesos she could buy a small house..... well again I decided not to respond. I don't like being a sucker, eventhough this happens to me from time to time.

That's about it, you know what to expect if the girl raises the financial issue..........

Sorry to hear your repeated story. But please don't give up as not all filipinas are asking for money. Scammers are everywhere so be careful with all the tricks you will encounter.
    Goodluck for your next try.

Well at the same time you feel a bit guilty when you know the living conditions in the Philippines. Once I communicated with a schoolmistress in Quezon City, she had to share a room with her brother, they had to share a bathroom with other people and they had no fridge.... mind you, no fridge in a tropical country! And still she had to sell Avon stuff to make both ends meet.... but of course it is not pleasant when this feeling of guilt and compassion is exploited by scammers!

Sorry to hear that Pacificelectric. You seem a nice and genuine person. You deserve someone like you as well. Don't get disappointed you will meet the perfect one for you. Just be very careful because scammers are everywhere. Decent women don't ask money from people they don't even know and never met in person. It's obvious that it is a scam but still you keep on sending money to her. You're really loaded i suppose....

Best of luck in your search...
I agree...decent woman dont ask money to whom they are talking in net.If the purpose is to find out a real and serious relationship. Its not bad doing so, like sending money if the relationship is too close already and committed with each other surely. And have meet in person already too...So when a woman ask money easily, even just have newly known each other,, its a real scam..so beware especially young girls using cafe..

same here, when i applied for my fiancee visa ,some friends of mine says, did you put some western union receipt there, i said "why? he didn't send me money since we met more than year ago" and the reason they say is "commitment" issue, but i think i would be more questionable of the ECO if i ask money, cause i have good business here

the issue here is not all filipina are asking for money

from the photos she is not Abu Sayaf..... not even his sister!!!

SHe is from Davao City and I hope the city is safe. I remember quite vividly the episode of hostage-taking of several westerners among whom several French in Jolo in 2000.... 32 weeks prisoners in the jungle!

Davao is, indeed, safe. I've been out and about in Davao today, and left to drive home to Tagum at around 19:30.

However, venturing too far (50kms?) south or west from the city is probably not a good idea at the moment.

There is always more chances of kidnappings happening in the Southern part of Mindanao.

Davao has a good mayor who is known for putting a lot of effort to keep the city safe but please use common sense and read up on the do's and don't do's while there.

If someone offers you a cheap holiday on the islands at the south of Mindanao run run run

I haven't seen the TV news yet but, as far as I can see, most (all?) the recent kidnaps have been is Sulu or Basilan .. quite a way from Davao.

I know that when there have been security problems around here, the police road checks are very evident ... one evening we were stopped and searched three times between Davao and Tagum. There was no sign of any extraordinary activity today.

i had sideline jobs when i was there (other than my accounting jobs): sold AVON products, Dakki Inflatable pillows, insurances name it!! hehhe...

also, sharing rooms with relatives are so common (but not with a brother if they belong in the same age group?)...

fregarding the fridge: NOT YOUR PROBLEM! there is always an ICE BLOCK/cubes that can be bought in the nearby convenience store...

but she is indeed a scammer.. just be very careful next time...

Ummm ... before I arrived in her life, Ruby's family (about a dozen people living there) only had one bed and one room. The only other option was to sleep outdoors. The bed was Ruby's - she bought it because she had become accustomed to a bed while working in Singapore ... and other members of the family did share it with her.

I was also given to understand that life in Manila/Quezon City was far more expensive than anywhere else in the Phils and people there would end up in "crash pads" where they can be lie sardines in a tin can!
