Learning Tagalog?
I'm really trying to improve my Tagalog because I want my 18 month old to be bi-lingual also I would love to have better conversations with my in-laws.
Mrsjarv is helping, I've got a good text book to work through, I try to download some films (with subtitles) and we listen to e-Radio. (any other suggestions?)
I wondering how many guys/hubbys here can already speak tagalog (if so how well?) or are learning (if so how's it going?)

My fiance knows a bit of Tagalog now and still continuous to learn. He recently made his own learn Tagalog in Youtube on his own lol Very proud of him.
He find's it easier to learn when he is surrounded by our relatives during a drinking session lol A Lesson in progress while having fun.
And of course it does help a lot if the wife/partner talks to him in Tagalog and explain as you go along.
He can speak to me in Taglish (Tagalog English) which makes sense to me most of the time lol I think it's a good way to learn...mix it.
hmm... there must be some learning material somewhere. Like books for children and the like. Preferably online of course
All I had was a tagalog<->english dictionary and a cd with some basic words and sentences, and of course that's fine for tourist purposes, but not if you want to have a conversation. Eg. I still have no idea of the basic rules in the language.
But I think if we had access to children learning books, that would be excellent.
There are loads of learning materials. If you are still in the Philippines, have a look in National Bookstore. You can try the books kids use when they are just starting to learn to read and speak English because there are translations there but obviously you have to do it the opposite way.
There are youtube videos of Learning Tagalog too. Free and worth a listen.

I'm SHOCKING in tagalog. I know only a few words, but my gf seems to think I'm great.
I look up individual words and meanings online as we're not together often enough at the moment for me to learn a lot from her, and when we talk online it seems a waste to use precious time not understanding
There are a few online translators, but I havent yet found one that's actually reliable. I thnk its because there are so many changed forms of words that dictionaries can't really keep up.
1 book that might be worth checking out is 'making out in tagalog' . Its pretty basic (which means its perfect for me), and more of a phrase book than real learning material, but it does focus on everday language and not the real formal stuff that most 'Learn a language' books go for.

Hubby doesnt want to learn tagalog and he said he isnt gonna earn money there,and he said kids jed/jen should learn english ,fair enough
i tried teaching my partner tagalog words which are easiest to learn - the naughty words are the quickest to remember but he is terrilble...i cant believe it
I`ve learned a few words from my wife.
She calls me Pangit which she says is handsome and everytime I kiss and hold her she says Hindi which obviously means "dont stop, ooohhhh yes just there"

If I lived in Phil i`d learn the language but as i`m here i`ll pick up what i can from my wife and step-son.

Personally I think it's annoying not to know what people are talking about and when I use translators, like google's, I'm always afraid to say something stupid like "you mom is a goat" or something like that. I once tried to use the google translator and told the wife that she should give my regards to the family there. I'm not sure What I said, but I could hear in her voice that she was struggling not to cry of laughter, and I could hear her sisters in the background giggling
My hubby is getting good in Tagalog. The first thing he learned are the nasty words
We went to mall in the Philippines one time and I saw him hiding something at the bookstore. When we arrived home and stay in bed, he was talking some censored.
Here's what he was saying:
Taggalin mo na ang suot mong damit, bra at panty at mag-umpisa na tayo etc.
The next morning , I found his book under his pillows
I have learnt some words and phrases in Cebuana like "Nahigugma Ko Pagayo Sa Imo Akong Asawa Gwapa"[I Love You Very Much My Beautiful Wife......please correct me if I am wrong)]
I know it is because she wants to improve her English all the time.
When I buy phrase books to help me learn more, she always says "I like this book dear".She smiles at me with her beautiful look, so I never really move the ball along.
Why is it that the fairer sex always get their way with that smile
When she is here in the UK I will be able to have a look at her books again

I, like sysop would also love to know what a 'torrent site' is? I'm asuming it's like tucows or something? I looked into rosetta stone when learning Mandarin and yes it is good but not cheap :(

my hubby learnt a few tagalog and bisayan words. But he really wanted to learn bisayan language so that its easy for him to communicate my prents then.

Ive found a good program and the basic version is free, search BYKI.com they have free downloads for all different languages but the Tagalog version seems really good and once ive got the hang of the basics ill be buying the deluxe version from them, give it a search. Oh an also got a book from Amazon UK its called "Making Out In Tagalog which has alot of basics and alot of other words of a naughty nature that you will never find in the other books. Good luck.

I'm not one to judge, so you can make your own minds up whether to use them or not.
The first thing I taught to hubby is the correct pronunciation of our alphabets.
When I haven't taught him yet the correct pronunciation, I couldn't understand his tagalog.
When he read oftentimes our alphabets, it's sounds better
