Very handy particularly for those abroad or with only mobiles. BT now have made most 0870 and 0845 numbers free like local calls. Made a difference for us. But you need to check what package you have and the particulalr 08 number it is.

So on BT and im sure others if you check witrh them. Now on many pacakges they are free.

But be careful of 0871 and 0844 numbers as not affected and also probably worth checking on an indivudal basis any 0870 or 0845 number with bt if you use frequently or a lot.

As mentioned also worth noting 0800 numbers are not generally free calling from Mobile.
Oh lord why did you make so many clothes and shoe shops

Apologies for resurrecting this 'old hat'. However, only yesterday, I had occasion to call the Pension Service with regard to my joining the rank and file of the "Zimmer Brigade" in a few months from now. Consequent upon the demise of the nationwide DSS 'walk-in' centres, budding OAPs are now forced to avail themselves of the dreaded 0845 facility - and endure all the preliminary paraphernalia this entails - in order to elicit a response to the simplest of queries as to exactly how much an individual can expect to receive.

Alas, at this moment in time, I'm no further forward. Suffice to say, though, in my subsequent efforts to 'google' landline numbers, I stumbled upon an online opinion poll inviting people to "sign" a petition objecting to NHS use of 084 dialing codes - the intention being that once a sufficient number of votes had been cast, the protest would then be forwarded to 10 Downing Street.

    And then what?

Anyway, being part of the minority group that doesn't possess a car, I rely heavily on public transport [when I'm not using my bike] and, thankfully, am able to use the free Scottish Bus Pass - even although my wife is still a long way off qualifying for this privilege. Infuriatingly, irrespective of whether enquiring about local services (Traveline) Scottish Citylink or National Express, it is still necessary to prefix the numbers by 0870/1 or - even worse - the 0900 premium rate at 60p per minute, and AGAIN be subjected to the same ensuing palaver ... Grrrrrrrr!
