I suppose my first claim to fame was when I appeared on the New Faces TV talent show in 1973, we came second and only lost out by 2 points in the judges scoring. It wasn't like X Factor or these other talent shows back then, there was no coaching or support on talent shows in those days and you only got one chance in front of a live audience to get it right, you just turned up and done your thing and it was up to the judges and the audience whether you were any good or not. Even though we didn't win, we got so much work after that one TV appearance, we were always having to beg our manager to give us a night off now and then.
My other claim to fame was in and around the sixties live music scene in Coventry, there was a guy called Pete Waterman. He was a DJ most of the time, but he would would have a go at anything really. He happened to be a very good friend of the lead guitarist in the group I sang with and when I got fed up with the rest of the group, jacked in and went off in a mood, which I did from time to time, our lead guitarist would sometimes call on his friend Pete Waterman to fill in as lead vocalist for a few gigs.
Then after a couple of weeks, when I'd calmed down, I go back and re-join the band. So there, Pete Waterman used to be my stand in. I wish I could be his stand in for just one night these days, as I'm sure I'd earn a helluva lot more standing in for him for 10 seconds than he ever did standing in for me.
Iain.
