    Well ... plain flour is used for making yorkshire puddings.

    But the reason most fail to rise is because the fat is not hot enough. It must be very hot when the batter mixture is added, otherwise your batters are most unlikely to rise up.

    Good luck, hopefully one day I will be trying out cooking like that out there!
