Knock! Knock!…“Green Thumb”

Hello gardeners,

I believe many Filipinos in this forum who loves gardening like me. Im just wondering guys if I can grow papaya here in the UK?
At the moment I had 3 green houses and I had talong, sili, tomatoes, sweet peas, beans, kalabasa, melon, cabbages, onions, cucumber, lettuce, beetroot, strawberries, & many flowering plants growing LOL.
My poor “okra” didn’t survive. My “Gabi” died last winter but I discover rhubarb is good as a substitute of gabi hehe. I am cookin it with bagoong ang friend tilapia hahaha (Ilokano food)

I love tinola, and I got plenty of green pepper leaves so can u pls tell me if you have idea if papaya will grow to UK land?

When we went home to the Phil (May 2007), I carried lots of dandelion seeds but sadly they grow but didn’t go long. Nothing survivesi just like dandelion flowers

Any Phil veg that i can grow over here?

My Filipina wife is a keen gardener; indeed, she's a graduate in Agriculture & Horticulture ... specialising in plant propogation. Even as I type she's busy "beavering away" outside. So, on reading your interesting post, I thought I'd ask her about papaya-growing.

Since she only came here in March, she's yet to experience a typical British Winter, and hence cannot easily predict the survival rate for papaya in the UK. However, based on her knowledge of tropical fruits in general, she thinks it unlikely that they will withstand the cold temperatures. Some MIGHT thrive in greenhouse conditions, but again, it's difficult to guage.

BTW, I was greatly heartened to read of your dearly-loved husband's steady progress. May he go from strength to strength with each and every passing day.

No, its no good. You have to buy the potato for planting.

Alugbati will grow in pot in the green house from seeds and lemon grass. Pechay will grow outside in summer time. I tried kangkong,okra, sitao and etc., they germinate but they will not grow they slowly died.

Will you can try papaya,plant it in a big pot and put it in the green house.

Actually if you got a big green house and high enough and have a heater and maintain a temperature of 24 degree in the winter I think the tropical plants will survive.

I always tried to plant Philippines veggies. But they all grow only during summer. It takes 3 months before papaya can give you fruit. Try to plant it before summer

If you want Philippine pechay, i Have some here. My okra? It has flowers but didn't survive. But my ampalaya is quite good. I love to cook ampalaya leaves too. Sahog sa monggo I have sili pasete, the smallest but hottest

I will try to bring malunggay branch here as it good for our blood. Will also try to bring Pandan and other seeds.

I'm a gardener too as my Dad was a model farmer in our town before. I think like father like daughter My 2 brothers working in a golf course too. They both supervise greenkeepers and they are both expert in greenkeeping.

An old gardener said to me when I was a kid, " If you ever need to know if something will grow in your garden...dont ask, plant a seed or cutting. Keep it warm when its needs and cool when its hot, water gently with warm water never cold and if conditions are right. The plant will thrive, i fnot go to nearest supermarket and buy one!

I can find papaya here at plymouth but at the city center only and were not goin out often. Buying other vegetables is handy but we love to see growing plants sorrounds our house. (Hindi nababayaran ang bigay na ligaya) especially when they starts bearing fruits, so lovely to see, very relaxing, releases stress, a therapeutic view.

True Planting gives us peace of mind too. If I have time, I just stay inside the garden house. Nakakatuwa, masaya at maganda ang pakiramdam.
