According to a Reuters report there are more burglaries in Manchester than any other part of England and Wales.
LONDON (Reuters) - Residents in Manchester suffer the most burglaries in England and Wales while those living in Teesdale in Durham suffer the fewest, according to figures from the Conservatives on Wednesday.
Based on statistics from 368 Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships, there were 7,167 domestic burglaries in Manchester from 2008-9 or the equivalent of 35 for every 1,000 households.
Nottingham, with 33.3 offences per 1,000 homes, and Reading with 30 burglaries per 1,000 households, had the next highest rates of offences.
At the other end of the scale came Teesdale, with 1.27 burglaries per 1,000 homes, Eden in Cumbria, and Broadland in Norfolk.
"These figures show that in the worst areas, there's been a burglary in almost every street in the past few months," said Chris Grayling, the Conservative home affairs spokesman.
"The increase in burglaries is a big problem, and it's not just down to the recession."
Government statistics earlier this month showed that theft crimes, such as pickpocketing and bag-snatching had soared over the last year, suggesting that the economic decline was fuelling a rise in stealing.
Police figures showed that domestic burglaries had risen by one percent from the previous year, the first rise since 2003.
The government has promised action to counter any rise in "acquisitive crime" during the recession, with investment in preventative measures and targeted policing.
