Being grateful and news reports

One thing that having a loved one in a country like the Philippines does for me is that it has broadened my outlook on different cultures, being grateful for what we have here and the way news is reported.

I notice the thread about the lahar landslides, and Baguio etc and it emphasises what i have thought for a long time now. The Phils and countries like them have these natural disasters etc on a regular basis....people die , many people die and many others lose their homes.........if you search Very carefully you may see the smallest of snippets mentioned in the press here but it will be highly unlikely . If these things occured in more 'developed ' countries the news reporting would be very different. It annoys me that there is little or no mention of it on our news here. We live in such a topsy turvey world ...those that have and those that dont, but we are all human beings with the same ability to be hurt physically and emotionally.

Leaves on the line bring our railways to a stop, we get 3inches of snow and the end of the world has come...sensational headlines gallop across our newspapers.

If and when we would ever get Typhoons and have people dying and losing their homes then we would have something to worry about and can you imagine the SENSATIONAL way that would be reported ? The people in the Phils and other countries have to get on with their lives when disaster strikes .

I know the Tsunami received worldwide coverage.....but i hope you get my point .

Pinas has always been rich in natural disasters due to its geographic location,its just the way it is,nothing we can do about it to be honest,the worlds a big place and we cant dwell on deaths in every single corner otherwise we would all be suicidal each time we skimmed a newspaper page or flicked through the news channels,if your living in asia you get their disasters reported more thoroughly in-depth,I remember when the Princess of the Stars sank last year however,it had 800+ on board?I thought that would have been covered more closely,though even the news in pinas about the boat faded after a short while and didnt dwell too long on the fact that the boat still contains to this day a large number of corpses there were rumours of a news blackout,though there is currently talk of refloating her,this is being debated due to safety and more importantly for pinas "Cost" so its not just UK news that doesnt give total coverage to disasters.

Agreed you can t dwell on every death that occurs in the world, my main annoyance is that a Typhoon like the one that hit the Phils, devastated many lives and should at least get some kind of a mention, i certainly never saw it in any news item except bbc asian section on the web. Also today the same Typhoon hit China and Japan, regrettably again many lose homes and many dead, this though made the main headlines as i said before is it because these are more recognised as developed nations??. All this is just an observation and I know thats the way it is. Seems a shame that our news is mostly about overpaid celebs having some kind of mishap etc, when real news if not important to us is brushed under the carpet.

totaly agree with what you are saying


i being an avid news watcher i prefer watching news from asia [hopefully not disasters] than watching a bunch of scroats from any of our major cities stick there fingers up to the cameras or giving us the hard luck story

if i had my way i would ship them all to a third world country and give them a taste of THE REAL WORLD but why should we burden third world countries with our sh*t

Dave,watch the TV from the "Real-world" It angers me,Pinoy "Stars" saying how hard their life is,I saw GMA's daughter being interviewed,she was saying her brother mikey who was being criticised for talking like an idiot talks that way because of the families humble roots,their humble beginnings,then saying how she liked the quiet humble life....blah.....blah....blah,after the interview she drove off in her 4X4 mercedes Humble?Those people live in the "Real" world but in ivory towers,I once saw sharon cuneta telling a woman with 7 kids from a squatter area how important skin care is for the face if you want to keep young At least our news does show world-wide news reports,pinoy TV is incredibly bad,obsessed as it is with the private lives of their "Mega-stars"
