Yea, even in the side streets around St Mark's it's just as bad. One piece of advice I can give to anyone thinking of going there, don't order anything that doesn't have the price clearly displayed or listed. I went into a little cafe joint with my then gf and we both had some lasagna, the price of which was clearly marked and was quite reasonably priced. When we got the bill, I was charged about £4 (this was around about 1980) for one of those little bottles of fizzy Fanta orange juice, which was more than we had paid for the 2 portions of lasagna Then when I argued about it and refused to pay, the guy threatened to call the police unless I payed up.
It's such a shame that the only lasting memory I seem to have of Venice is that the whole place is full of rip-off merchants.
