Pinay bags 'care award' in London

Filipino workers continue to bring honor and pride to the country particularly in the health sector.

Recently, a Filipina senior caregiver from Cagayan De Oro City bagged the special amazing care award in the 3rd Barchester Care Awards in London.

Natividad Dela Cruz bested the award from more than 1,000 health workers employed in almost 200 private homes in England, Wales and Ireland.

Dela Cruz is set to receive a cash prize and a trophy. She is one of eight senior caregivers of Queens Court Caring Home in Wimbledon, which has now 41 aging British patients.

Dela Cruz admits the difficulties of being caregiver as old patients become overly sensitive even on petty issues, but such work makes it more challenging for her.

Dela Cruz belongs to a family of caregivers. Three of her sisters are also caregivers in the different London hospitals. A younger brother works as a nurse in a nearby hospital.

For Dela Cruz, the work of carer is perfect for Filipinos especially if such profession is rejected by most Brits and European Union citizens.

Even her boss, Shaaron Caratella, talks highly of Filipino health workers.

If UK immigration is not so strict in its present rules, Caratella would prefer to hire Filipino carers rather than other nationalities.

Caratella believes there is still a big demand for carers in the UK as its population is aging, and many senior citizens are batting for additional health care.

Elsa also works in a care home, and is very popular with all the patients and staff. In fact her boss told me that given the choice, she would rather employ more Filipinas as they are very reliable and hardworking.

You need to moderate your choice of words young lady as your starting to annoy people. I've already had some complaints, and I don't want to see any more.

CRITICIZING OTHERS IS A DANGEROUS THING, NOT SO MUCH BECAUSE YOU MAY MAKE MISTAKES ABOUT THEM, BUT BECAUSE YOU MAY BE REVEALING THE TRUTH ABOUT YOURSELF.

it is sad for katy's mum to have that bad experience with a filipina carer. but it is unfair that katy make that bad judgement of all of us filipina. if i am as prejudice as katy, i could comment endlessly about other race/nationality, too.

as i work in a carehome, i see and talk to a lot of families and relatives. some are supportive of the staff and some others are not so trustful specially to foreigners. that is understandable. but in my work and study, a next of kin who is always suspicious of staff is noted to be full of 'GUILT'...the guilt of not being able to look after their parents themselves...guilt of passing on the responsibility to other people...
