    I just discovered Filipinas....

I'm here because I recently met this most amazing Filipina.
I didn't even know, for sure, where the Phillipines were before....
(But yesterday Labuyo taught me serious lessons, here in UK)

I'm interested in other Brits experiences of doing 'this one'!?!
All new to me, but I got a serious interest in this area now.....

Me, in a sentence am Brit, retired, long divorced, bored, and then I 'meet' a Filapina!!!
    Life changing stuff.

OK. Not the best intro, but I got hypnotised! Don't blame me.

Discovered filipinas?Ferdinand Magellan might just have beaten you to it methinks

Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you'll be up again. But life goes on.
The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the passion that she shows to the outside world.

Nobody's blaming you, mate! On the contrary, MOST - if not all - of us British males on this site, found ourselves "bowled-over" by or, as you say, under the "hypnotic influence" of our Filipina mahals.

It was certainly a NEW experience to me too. I'm also retired and, after 16 long years of widowhood - followed by quite a few [shall we say?] 'casual' dalliances' - I had been perfectly content to drift gracefully into old age without feeling any real need to "settle down" for a second time ... or so I imagined ...

... until "fate" (call it what you will) decreed otherwise when, in September 2007, I began corresponding with a schoolteacher from the southern island of Mindinao. And, suddenly, my sagging spirits were rejuvenated. But that's not all! A year later, I visited her not once ... but TWICE, in as many months and, on the second occasion, we were married in the Phils. That was last December, and she's been here in the UK since March.

Just goes to show that people of our age should never consider ourselves as being too old, eh? Welcome, my friend ... I wish you well in your new-found happiness.

It's good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good to check up once in a while to make sure you haven't lost the things that money can't buy.

OK, OK I didn't get the grammar perfect....
Can you prove it was Magellan?
Might just be that the people living there at the time 'discovered' it long before Magellan was conceived?

I only learnt to spell Phillipines, er Philippines or is it Philipinnes, recently..... does it really matter?
Ain't it the thought that counts?

Thanks Iain, I met my Filipina on the Guardians Soulmates site.
Light-hearted thing for me at the time, but I bought a 3 month subscription and cancelled it after 2 weeks. Didn't need that any more.
    Never been the same since!

Like yesterday I get a text saying 'we got flooded out by the tail end of Typhoon Labuyo'. She lives in Las Piñas City, in a low lying area, and lost 99% of her hard won possessions. I speak to her today in the process of cleaning up, and she says quite calmly 'we get 3 a year on average...'

    It's an education for me.
    In many different ways.

    Thank you kind sir!
Just the sort of sentiment I need right now.
Being at the beginning of what looks like a long, difficult journey.
    And I know nothing.
    Yet.

Thank you I didn't know what Labuyo meant until I asked a certain person this morning, still suffering in the wake of the Typhoon of that name.
She will laugh when she finds out what I'm doing though

Thanks for your kind words sir.
(I replied above without realising how to properly navigate or edit. Unlike Magellan...)
I'm very interested in other peoples similar experiences because it is all new territory for me and I don't want to waste valuable time
Hearing your story is a bit of a confidence booster

Age differences are also significant and I wonder what potential snags lie there.
Meanwhile I concentrate on the positive.
    Plenty of that.

    In many different ways.

First of all, let me welcome you in the forum.

You will find lots of friendly advice from people of all walks of life, that have gone on the expensive, painful and heartbreaking LDR path, and come out at the other end, far stronger and happier for having undertaken that journey.

I strongly advise you to read everything on Peter's website http://www.british-filipino.com/ .

Mull over, and digest what you have read, and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to post.
But before you do that, try to use the search function with some keywords.
Usually, someone, some other time, will have asked exactly the same, and the answer/s will be found there within the various replies.

As you may have noticed, I did highlight a part of your post.......

It is for every newbie on the forum, do not part with any money, no matter what the emergency is....

That is unless you have personally met the lady in question and you are 100% satisfied that she is genuine.

Just to be on the safe side.
Lots of members will agree with me, that unfortunately some ladies do trawl the net for scamming the innocent and unwary.
And the "few" seem to give the good ones a bad name.

    Again, a warm welcome.

Please take this advice to heart, the scammers are quite clever, many are chatting to lots of guys at once and they will spend many hours online allowing the "relationships" and the "trust" to mature somewhat before they will ever even think of asking for money. The really clever ones will never even ask, they will just tell you their sob stories and wait for you to offer.

A real genuine Filipina would probably be to ashamed to ask someone she has never met for money. So if she does start to ask, tell sob stories or drop hints, the best thing to say is "I would never dream of sending money to someone I have never actually met". You'll soon know what the score is if you say that, a professional scammer will drop you like a hot potato and move on to the next guy.

    Iain.

    Good luck!

I met my fiancee in Israel when I was there on a weeks training with work. I'd only just separated from my ex wife, and neither of us were looking for a relationship. (actually, I'm pretty sure that filipinas are ALWAYS looking for the right guy so that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but I certainly wasn't).
I was just completely bowled over and can honestly say that Ive never felt so much in love, or loved, in my entire life.

DO be careful though. As has been pointed out, scammers are very good and hard to spot.
Having said that, life in Phils can be hard and sometimes there are legit expenses. Just make sure you're VERY sure before sending money.
