I wish we can raise some funds for the families there.

I've once donated a money for Philippines through British Red Cross when the Philippines had a disaster (i think landslide) a few years back.

Considering the scale of the disaster, How on hearth can they state such figures with that kind of accuracy so early...???

They can't, in my view it's all guesstimates just now, the early reports seemed to be missing areas that were definitely in trouble.

Guessing to the figures they do have.Having those NSO statistics does help know where people live, but doesn't take into account travel, babies&street kids

I wish we can raise some funds for the families there.

I know I am a cynic, but as with all money raised for disasters, charities etc. its sad that probably a lot of that collected will be siphoned off. In our case, as of course with many others here, we will send money to my wife's relatives, so we will know it has reached a needy family and not a greedy one.

Members of the public generally who want to help will not be so reassured when they donate to a central fund.
