    How Long ...

... CAN it take from the onset of contractions until 'the average' woman is delivered of her baby?

My daughter - who lives in a small rural community - called me quickly yesterday lunchtime to say she and her husband were about to set off on the 30-mile journey to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital ... where she's booked in for the birth of her second child.

Naturally enough, I've been on tenterhooks ever since ... having slept very little in the past 24 hours [which explains my unusually high (even for me!) nocturnal input to the forum.]

Thing is, she's 40 years old. And this will be her first experience of 'natural childbirth' - her little boy (now 3) having been born by Caesarean Section. Her "due date" was Sunday past. But it was only yesterday that her labour pains began to manifest themselves.

I'm still waiting anxiously with the phone at my side ... expecting it to ring at any moment ...

In my experience Arthur - my first came 17 hours after first contractions - my second about 6 hours. So there is no real answer.

However, I am not a woman so I dare say you will get more accurate responses from our 'mummy' members.

Don't worry though - there is never any point in worrying!

    All the best.

    hi there arthur!

I remember when my mom gave birth to my younger brother (she was 39 then), contraction started at 4pm then she gave birth at around 3am..

When I gave birth to my little Therion, the contractions started at 10 am.. gave birth (natural) to my son at exactly 12 midnight.

oh, and we started counting when the contractions are 5 minutes apart...

so, probably 12 hours on average?

Many thanks, Ayin. Being a mere male, it's most reassuring to read about matters like this from a woman's perspective ... based on first-hand knowledge and experience.

I think it's anywhere between a few hours to 4 days.

Thanks; ah well, all in good time, I suppose ... 'Mother Nature' CAN'T and WON'T be hurried! Seems like it's just a case of waiting, more waiting ... and ...

Many thanks, Ann for providing further kind words of reassurance and comfort based on your own two experiences. I'm at last delighted to announce that Fiona gave birth to a wee girl at 4.24 this afternoon. According to the proud Dad, both mother and daughter are doing fine ... though Fiona, understandably [in Dean's words] is "feeling knackered" after being in labour for nearly 30 hours.

Many thanks, Ana. Again, I would say to YOU as well, "Never give up hope" ... both my grandmothers had their last babies when they were a year older than you are now - and that was back in 1916 and 1926, respectively!

Many thanks, Florge. Yes, I'm sure you'll have quite a few years ahead for having children. Fiona & Dean were married in July 1996, and Ewan wasn't born until October 2006 ... when Fiona was 37 ... although they'd WANTED to start a family much sooner. So never give up hope, my friend! I'm told the new baby's name will be Freya.
