WHEN in Italy, don’t be surprised if Filipinas are looked upon as cleaning women. As per their unofficial dictionary, this is their racist definition of women from the Philippines.

According to the October 1 issue of Time magazine, a cleaning woman is often called “Filippina.”

The article, entitled “What Berlusconi’s Tan Obama ‘Jokes’ Say About Italy” also touched on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s alleged racist remark against U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Italian PM has reportedly described the next U.S. president as “young, handsome and had a good tan.”

According to the La Repubblica, the Rome-based Socialist newspaper, “A cleaning woman is often generically referred to as ‘Filippina.’” Darker -- skinned helpers are generally called “Moroccans.”

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has revealed that more than 80,000 Filipinos are working as domestic helpers in Italy. Their chores include house cleaning, baby sitting and caring for the sick and elderly.

Ukrainian and Moldavian migrants also make up the domestic help industry in Italy.
