According to the October 1 issue of Time magazine, a cleaning woman is often called “Filippina.”

The article, entitled “What Berlusconi’s Tan Obama ‘Jokes’ Say About Italy” also touched on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s alleged racist remark against U.S. President Barack Obama.

The Wife and I are just back from Italy Rome to be precise. Plenty of Fillipinas out there and to be honest the majority of local italians treated them well.
One older smart well to do Italian Lady my Wife befriended at a bus stop just round the corner from the palatine hills was chatting to her about the phillipines and were her family ok due to the typhoons and flooding. Plus plenty of other italians and all were ultra friendly. I think its the roman catholic link

In fact Rome and i belive milan is very Filipina friendly from our experience. Every bus we jumped on while in rome had a fillipina. Termni Bus station and train station was like manila with so many phills it was odd to see a non phill.

Even in the collesum we bumped into a pinay who took out photo. Plenty of the resturants and cafe bars are staffed by phills. Very handy for good service and the rest of the staff even seemed to be more firendly once they knew

In the vatican st peters basicalia gift shop the Nuns treated My Wife better as she was trying to buy as many bits as she could for Friends and family back home as her budget would allow, compared to these Yank couples buying flash silver crosses and looking for only the "best"!

The Wife has been to Italy Three times to various areas and always treated with respect of course there are rougher rasict areas even in rome but there are idiots all over the world who dont like those different to themseleves.

There seem to be some kind of preferential treatment, as on a couple of occasions only People from PINAS were given amnesty if overstaying or illegal....

About five years a go I had a Thai girl friend but was unable to get a visa for her to visit Spain. I gave up on the idea of a Thai.

After a while I told my son I was looking in the Philippines instead of Thailand for a wife. He was so pleased saying, in the UK Thai girls are all considered to 'less than desirable’ whereas people think all Filipinas are nurses.

In Spain, so called ordinary housewives are called ‘Marias’ but as the knee jerk reaction to anything which might possible be considered racist does not exist here, no body takes offence.

MMMMMM, I wouldn't change my wife for the world, but cook? She was the bread winner of the family in Phil. Another sister did the cooking, another the cleaning etc. so even after almost 4 years a fried egg and plain rice is the best she can do.

I will just ignore them as cleaning is a decent job! It's not harming others.
Filipinas are treating well in other coutries like Italy.
I have cousin who worked as bank teller int Philippines before for years but no luck to own a house, and now she's working there, she got a big beautiful house.

Maid is not a derogatory term unless you are talking to a female doctor and telling her, her work should be a maid.

Yeah I advise any Phill/Brit couple to go Rome A) its an amazing place, with great food and a climate which is familar to most phills allthough not so humid.

The chilled out slightly chaotic but things get done anyway, seems to make many phills feel at home.

Trust me if your Italian and Englsih not great in Rome you could probably get away with just tagalog

I took Jet to my hometown, and Rome, last year on a delayed honeymoon thingy, and she enjoyed it tremendously.
So much so, that she does want to go back....

I was nice to be mistaken for a foreigner, and some of the locals tried to experiment their english language skills on me, until I replied in the dialect of the area.....
Some surprised faces....

Even got away with parking the hire car in the disabled zone for hours.
And the car park attendant, was actually looking after it, for me....

Loveless again but im okay and happy thanks for that...my laptop's wireless connection is not working brought it for repair cost me £60 but only works for a week that's it busted again. So, need to work and work to get a new one. I'll just bring the old one to Phils when I get home.

Anyway, I got a job offer from Australia, if things all in place next month I might migrate there.
