I remember seeing a learned lawyer looking up the word "recourse" in his dictionary! The client thought it was some learned legal tome. He said "are you looking for a legal precedent" and the lawyer had to go back to "p" and look for "precedent"
I guess he went to the same uni as I did
Hi James, i'm sad to know University of the Philippines is nowhere to be found in the list compiled on the top 500 or 1000 Universities in the world .

" The people who mean something to your life are not rated "the best" don't have the most money, haven't won the greatest prizes....
They are the ones who care about you, take care of you, those who, no matter what, stay close by... "
I love Scotland, the Lochs, the Glens, the Coastlines, the Islands.
I love the Lake District.
I like the TV strangely, mostly the documentaries on Sky and the Beeb and as a Sci-fi fan Sky One is great.
I am proud of our history, at least proud of some of it, we did a lot of bad things like the rest of the colonial powers of old.
I do like our general sense of fairness, however it is I fear a dying trait, far too few see past narrow self interest these days.
I like the general lack of deadly creatures, earthquakes, volcano's i.e. our relative immunity from major natural disasters.
Our infrastructure although it could be much better.
And I am proud of our overall contribution to our understanding of all aspects of the Universe we live in (in all branches of fundamental science).
There are though lots of things I am not particularly fond of too but I'll save that for another day.
Jim
Although, the issue is funding.
Research undertaken in universities which contributes to their all over score depends largely on the funding awarded.
Therefore, the talent of the people aside, the fund-raising abilities of the universities is probably the most important thing, because they can then afford to hire the best to carry out the best research and therefore develop an international reputation.
The UK and USA are awesome at this, hence, better Universities.
also to the list
-Darwin
-Kelvin
-Hawking
-Newton
-Goldacre
any others I failed to mention?
-Alton towers
-Blackpool
-British style kebab
Yeah, I am proud of these things
Oh yes,
-No Mozzies (mosquitoes)
Maybe we should look back in history first and I suggest you to do some reading...Most of the things you written above has it's roots back from early colonisation of Philippines. If you understand its past then you might understand why it become as it is now...
Where we are now and why we have certain mentality, attitude or whatever you call it is because of what we inherited from Spanish-American colonisation.
It takes time to develop a country, it takes years to civilise people.
The ancient world has been blended with mix culture for centuries, it was a melting pot of different culture where the history has been built, where civilisation started and the society that evolves is what we are living now...
Our history is only a mere period in compare to what your country has been through for centuries...

Very true Peanutz
It takes time, I was in tears reading the words of Jose Rizal on the walls of a memorial in The National Museum of the Philippines, I was feeling a bit fragile at the time but they were poignant words.
The country has had a hell of a history it is still growing and maturing, that so many are so kind and friendly for all they have to go through on a daily basis is a great credit to the people of the Philippines!
Jim
Hi Pea, thanks for commenting in my thread.
I have read some of Filipino history, although I don't pretend to know much about it.
Indeed, many things in what I have listed have their roots in colonisation, but the process of civilisation could easily take it's course. I mean, are you blaming the having 6 children whilst earning 200 peso and disregarding family planning clinics on - the Spaniards, or, the Americans? Let's get real. There's no excuse for ignorance in this modern world.
It's easy to blame things on others, but much harder to shoulder responsibility for those things ourselves.
I would love to start another thread - Pilipinas Kong Mahal - why are you proud to be a Filipino - although, I am not qualified to open that.
The fact that Philippines is uncivilised with all it's exposure to the outside world can be attributed not to those you wish to blame.
You seem cultured and intelligent, therefore it can be done, you weren't a victim!
Hold fire on there James, the process of civilisation takes years...ages...to shape one country, there is no blaming game on here, I am stating facts.
As the saying goes 'You cannot built Rome in one day', poverty and ignorance cannot be eradicated easily, to educate people and change their mentality is a long complicated process.
I absolutely agree that there is no excuse for ignorance in this modern world, but these words can apply only to those people who can understand.
I do not lose hope that one day the children of my children would inherit a different reality of Philippines.
We are getting there

James as I mentioned recently on another thread I come from a family in Scotland where my mother was the youngest of 11 and my dad the eldest of 13, it's not long ago that this was common in the UK, every country goes through this at some stage and every country has to come to an accommodation with it at some point.
The Filipino's will get to grips with this at some point same as we did.
Jim
And please...read my words carefully, cause being a victim is not my cup of tea...

Ahh! You should hear me talking about ALL the wrong doings about my country and my fellow-country man, I think they would call me very unpatriotic and suplada. I am aware of its ugly side.
I cannot ignore where I came from, and I suffer when I see my fellow Filipino's who are suffering because of their own ignorance, but no one is to blame...let history do its course and hopefully one day it will be a better place for the younger generation.
