Where to start for an accounting job?

I'm currently employed now but the career satisfaction is missing. I have a degree in accounting in the Phil and had 6 years work experience there. When i arrived here in UK five years ago, i tried to apply for hundreds(maybe thousands hi hi hi hi hi)of accounting job with no success. Obviously, i dont have UK accounting work experience which the employers keep on asking for. I was thinking of studying a course like AAT, ACCA, or Sage,etc. But the question is after i finished my course and go for job hunting i'm sure the employers will asked for working experience again.

I really dont know where to start and solve this predicament.

Any idea or suggestion from you is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you join an agency. One of the most recognised ones I can think of is MANPOWER. They will help you get many jobs regular if you just fill them in on your experience they will do the introduction for you.

In london and im sure elsewhere always seem to be plenty of accountancy jobs advertised in the agency windows, many people residing in the UK dont seem to like accountancy as a career choice a bit dull possibly? While many Phills seem to look at it as a good career.

Hello rainmaker, i think the best start would be taking the course to be AAT and ACCA certified here.....
You have to invest in yourself first before you get the return of your investment which is a good accounting job and accounting career here in the uk....
I think once you have the AAT and ACCA qualification, it will be easy for you to get an accounting job regardless of your lack of accounting work experience here....
As you just mentioned, you are working here and i suppose you've been working for quite a while having been here for 5 years already....
Although you're working in a different field, what's important is you already established a working history in the uk and got references/referees to vouch for that....
And don't fret about not getting hired after the AAT/ACCA course for lack of accounting work experience, chances are, it's more likely the opposite...
Be positive and work your way up to the goal you set coupled with diligence and hardwork - it will surely pay off

Thanks guys esp sophie There are times when i'm depressed coz i felt i doing a job just to earn money and support my family and not having a job satisfaction. I need a job where i'm good at but as i've said before nobody gives you a chance to prove my worth. I think for the hundreds of application i made for an accounting job, only two employers dare to invite me for an interview. And they asked for UK accounting work experience. I also signed for agency for them to look for jobs for me but without success. I know i have to adopt to the challenges UK has to offer. I'm really confused where to start for an accouting job. Whether to study first in order to obtain UK accounting qualification or look for first for accounting job w/o studying and gain experience and then study afterwards. dont know which path to take....

Send your CV into agency and get some tips on it. Remember CV is to get you an interview. If you send in 100 applications and don't get an interview. Something wrong with your CV. It does not sell you well. After all, CV is just to get people interested in you.

So get another opinion on it, if you have not updated for a long time, you could sell yourself better.

You are welcome. Know how that feels, look for job. It does help to have someone to bounce your ideas of. Ask them what am I good at to get your skill set- mental arithmetic, presentation of statistics, Analyzing complex information. You get the general idea. Utilization of a spreadsheets.

Want to do some research Monster.co.uk is a good site. They have some templates to work from, to give you the write buzz words to use.

Yes AAT is ok to start with you can start in Level 3 if u want to because you have the degree but I started AAT level 2 (its free tuition at the moment) ..Sage is ok and you can do home study. Just post your CV to REED, Jobstoday, Monster UK as well, the more the merrier.

CIMA ACCA and ACA are the next one after AAT and it depends if you want Financial Accounting or Management Accounting

Financial Accounts are prepared annually -mainly for the benefit of people outside the management of the business

Management Accounts prepared on a monthly basis to enable the managers to run the business effectively.

--Here in the UK if it is a big business the Finance Dept is split into different department ..as a starter you can try applying for Purchase ledger (payables) or Sales ledger (receivables)
-- if you apply for a job as long as you know the fundamentals of accounting then all will be ok - they will teach to how to use the software.
--One thing important is Excel , Word and Outlook .
There is no harm in trying have your CV ready and Upload it.

Accounting was my chosen course before and had years of experience until I get bored with it working with papers. I shift my career in working with people, handling people, dealing with people and found it great. Lately, I found computer is more interesting. When I arrived here, I supposed to study accounting courses but I prefered computing course.

Try to study the power of 2007 excel at home. I know more about 1997 and 2003 but 2007 is like a magic for me. You don't need calculator, piece of paper, mental calculation to get the sum and answers. There are logical functions and that is amazing. UK is updated so try it. If you already knew about excel 2007 completely, that is a good advantage. IMHO
