To correct a little misinterpretation, the Neanderthal's were a branch of humanity a separate species it is thought, they branched from our line a long long time ago, it is not known if any interbreeding could still occur with Cro-Magnon people around 45,000 years back so they may not have been a completely separate species (species boundary is usually defined by an inability to interbreed successfully)
The Neanderthal's are extinct, modern humans are from a separate lineage going back a long long way.
