One possibility is a lost or stolen cellphone, text messages get read, they realise that there are foreign numbers on the phone, enough personal details on the phone to identify the original owner, so they have a pretext to contact the foreigner then as the guys have said you are in for manipulation.
Be careful, you are right it's a long shot there are 17 million people in Manila, chances of the name being real are small never mind anything else.
