Real Philippine Music

One of the great things about the Philippines is the way they really love music. However, much of the music you hear from here are soul ballads or Filipino covers of Anglo-American pop music. Don't get me wrong, I love to hear it and the Filipino enthusiasm more than makes up for the odd missed note.

When I am alone though, my main loves in the UK are to listen to singer/songwriter stuff, folk bands, you know the sort of thing; Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Runrig.

I have discovered the music of Saro Banares and his band, "Asin".As soon as I heard it on a far away tape recorder I knew I was listening to something pretty special.

It got me wondering - What is the authentic musical sound of the Philippines, and where should I look to find it?

I've also noticed that Filipino's produce some very special music, I'd very much like to record some Filipino musicians if anyone knows of any..(I'm an amateur record producer..) My Vimvie plays guitar, she could easily be a pop star, but she's too shy!

how 'authentic' would you like it to be? Are you prepared to hear 'kulintangs'? Because that is one of the intruments you will hear when you want to experiece authentic philippine music

Sure! I would LOVE to record her! I'm quite good in sound recording..not so good at camerawork..

I recorded the "Old York Road Festival" In Wandsworth, both the audio and the video camera..

Audio and Video is recorded separetely then meshed together afterwards using computer program...check out my work here! :-)

The Hobbit house in Malate often has some very good singer songwriter types, it's moved from it's old location though as the land was being redeveloped into a Condo block.



There also used to be a really good place next door called Rendezvous which is also gone for the same reason.

Malate is great for live and often acoustic/unplugged music, we once found a great wee pub that had some excellent folk musicians but we lost it again and still have not found our way back, trouble with getting taxi's too often

This guy was also good and performed his own songs (also Hobbit House)



There are also two separate good acoustic places just a few yards before and after Bedrock just after Cafe Adriatico at Remidios Circle.

If I'm in Manila I usually stay in Malate area. My favourite bar for modern live music is Bedrock. I live the atmosphere and the way the bar has been decorated out. I always make a point of calling at some point.

Good point Jam07 - Maybe I should have put AUTHENTIC in quotes myself. I decided not to to guage reaction. So far it has been pretty good. Thanks to everyone.

I am not a person to say "No!" to any instrument, or anyone who tries by any means to go beyond commerce to a deeper expression of the universally human. Maybe the last sentence is my definition of authentic. Maybe I should have put the word human in quotes as well.

Hobbit House is a haunt of Freddie Aguilar, I've seen him in there quite a few times, although I only ever saw him play a floor spot once. He has and does have top billing there too on occasion.
