... Well, having been born in Fife [Kirkcaldy, I think] he's most definitely a Scot ... and, looking at him on television, he certainly presents as being a dour one. But then, as a 'son of the manse', he was most likely raised in a traditionally-strict Presbyterian household.

... Correction: Gordon Brown was actually born in Govan, on Glasgow's South side. However, he moved to Fife with his parents at an early age, and attended Kirkcaldy High School ... where my youngest cousin - a pupil there at around the same time (albeit a few years his junior) - remembers him being a prefect.
Coincidentally, my cousin afterwards studied at the same university [Edinburgh] as our current PM ... again, at a later date, although Brown earned a PhD (bet you didn't know that!) from his alma mater in 1982.
