i noticed in France, to go to a grocery store and stand in line.A frenchman you dont know,will stand behind you VERY close .Nothing harm done, but THAT WAS REALLY CLOSE. It was unsettling, LOL.

Once,I was also checked for my bus ticket, still valid, but the inspector said: I must go down the bus with him to see his Superior who was standing near the bus .When I saw the man, the man said: I am single, you see, and I am looking for an Asiatic lady to marry...
I burst out laughing, and went back to the bus... LOL

mostly i think it is because the french are used to charm, subtle and romantic and lives in close quarters.
in compare to americans thier space is so important .They like huge spaces...

Or Americans when start to flirt, are afraid to be sued?
