Hello FilipinoUK Community,

I am John of Cebu City. My wife and I are very interested to migrate to London through my wife's study program(student visa application).

BTW I am currently connected with one of the biggest telco companies here in the Philipines as a network specialist. Been with IT industry for about 10 years now. My wife on the other hand is a call center agent of a known printer company (not actually a BPO) also here in Cebu. She has also finished SPED.

Her mom is already there working as a secretary of a business man based in London as well. My sister is a nurse working at Warwick.

Most likely, my wife will go there first this June. She will leave me together with my daughter here for a few months. Hopefully we can decide so soon on when we will all migrate there. As of now we are still processing her student visa application.

Please send us tips or suggestions for these items below:
1. Agency to approach
2. Direct application
3. Employment opportunities for me (ECE/ITC) and my wife (IT/SPEC)
4. Places to settle where our respective professions are mostly needed
5. Airsoft locations (hehe... because this is my most beloved sport)

Hi and welcome to the forum. Things are being tightened up in this country with regard to student visas because there were so many people coming here who were not registered with genuine colleges and who's real intentions were to get to the UK to work. So if and when your wife decides where and what she wants to study in the UK, you should ensure that the college is genuine and is on the UK government's list of recognised colleges. She will also have to have finances in place to support her in the UK for the period of her study and she can't rely on working here to support herself because as a student she will only be allowed to work 20 hours a week.

As for yourself, I think you will need to read this http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/howtoap...sskilledworker , because I don't think you will be able to join your wife here if she only has student visa, I think you will have to qualify to come here in your own right under the highly skilled migrant points based system.

Hi Netad! Welcome to our forum. Newbie are very much welcome to introduce him/her self at Introduce Yourself section. Members will then happily welcomes you.

You can also use our search button if you want to know more answers about your plans. We have some questions in our forum before that is similar with yours.

As far as I know, Student visa holders are not allowed to sponsor families to get over here. If your wife intention is to study, then she needs to comeback after her schooling. If she got a job after studies, she need to stay here and work and wait until she is allowed to sponsor her family. So normally it takes 4-5 years to wait. Let other members to reply as there are moderators here who knows more.

There are loads of IT here in the UK and honestly say, there are many unemployed IT graduates. But then there are filipinos here working at call center industry but it was closed due to recession. http://findarticles.com/p/news-artic.../ai_n35486867/

So long as you can show enough money when appling to support all of you (student visa + dependants) for up to 9 months. Could work out to be fair amount of money especially if applying from inner London.

Don't expect getting a good job to be easier in the UK as the job market isn't great at the moment. Where exactly (which college) will you wife being studying? Might be able to give you some better answers to your questions.

Good luck, and I wish you well. It might be tough, but as has been said, read into the Skilled Migrant opportunities. Be very wary of any agencies in the Philippines who make 'promises' or who request money for visas etc. The easiest way to get into the UK, you would need to be sponsored by a company here. So I think you'll just have to do a bit of research into the UK telecoms industry and see if your specialist area has a shortage, and if so maybe apply direct to the companies. Occasionally when companies are short of skills, they will sponsor a visa.

Thanks for all who responded! The warm welcome for all the newbie makes us feel really a part to this community. BTW my wife is applying for a student's visa since as per the advice of her mom who is already there, it is easier this time to go there as an entrance to the country. As per her she already met many Filipinos there who legally entered as a student and brought their husband/wife and are granted to work full time jobs - though they have landed a not so good paying ones but fairly decent enough to start with. She told us it will be hard at time but me and my wife will try to cope with the life style there just to try our luck. Just in case if we will feel that UK is not for us then we will use it as a stepping stone to our country of choice in the near future - Australia or Canada perhaps. The thing with these countries now, we still dont have relatives or even close friends to approach when we will need help. At least in UK I have my sister, mother in law, and cousin to call when we will need assistance. We know this will be a hard decision but we are doing this for the sake of the future of my family. Philippines is a nice country anyway but most leaders aren't IMHO, so I believe this is the one that drives me out here. We are just hoping that the next set of leaders in this coming May elections will be a lesser evil.

I don't know what quals or skills you both have, but if once here, one of you could apply for tier 1, you could get ILR after 5yrs, but if not it could be a struggle, one other way would be 10yrs legal stay in the uk (combination of time spent on other visas).

I thought the 10 year rule was one of the things being stopped, so no student coming here now will be able to get permanent residency unless they are are able to switch to work visa.

I thought the rule was being removed in July 2011, which means that anyone arriving here since August 2001 wouldn't be able to apply under the 10 year rule.
