I`d say Phil is like it was here years ago. Theres lots of staff to do little work. Get some fuel and theres plenty of staff there whereas here often its just a couple of people in the shop and no pump attendants. In fact some supermarkets filling stations are fully automated.
I just want to get my bits and bobs and go. I have no interest in being pointed towards the latest thing on their sales list instead of what I really want and I HATE being pounced on as soon as I walk into a shop.
    Yours sincerly
    misery guts

Yeah ... but there's a "happy medium". Quite probably it's a generational thing, as many of today's young people are conditioned into believing that self-service is the norm ... having grown-up in the Era of the Supermarket, and known little else. Take my son-in-law, for example. Born in 1973, he'll go into say, B&Q ... pick up an article for DIY use, proceed to the paypoint, present his bank card [or use chip 'n' pin] and walk out to his car. That's the way HE likes it; whereas, I much prefer there to be a member of staff on hand to direct me to the aisle in which I can expect to find the particular item(s) I need ... rather than traipse the length and breadth of some huge prefabricated warehouse searching fruitlessly for it/them, and having to depend upon overhead signs - which seldom seem to be shifted in line with the movement of relocated merchandise.

So, from MY point of view, there's STILL a great deal to be said for the 'old fashioned' approach ... such as, "Can I help you, sir/ma'am?"

i would of thought you would be at home going to B&Q, plenty older people working there

to be honest argos does seem to have nicer staff, even B&Q does.

it's just some of the lesser brand's or chain's at seem to employ the monkey's?
i have learnt to do what my wife says!

D'you know what amazes me? ... the number of wizened, crabbit-looking old crones to be found behind Customer Service Desks in some Superstores. It's almost as if they're installed there deliberately to deter anyone who might be daring enough to make a complaint ... and, frankly, I'm certain many of their [much] younger colleagues could teach them some decent manners!
