I think that we have to commend some shops/chains for their attention to customer care.
The big supermarkets cannot do enough for me when I ask questions, and Argos make it a principle to smile at the customers. (I have seen posters "behind" all these stores and they drum it into their staff that the customer is number one).
I feel things must be taken on a case-by-case basis.

I lived in the USA for quite a few years and the service there was second to none in the service sector.
Tips play a big part in this IMO. You really get to see bad service in the USA when you fly on their airlines; the flight attendants can be abrasive to say the least.
    They don't get tips..........

In some stores in the Philippines you can wait for over 30 minutes to pay for items.
I walk out when treated like this, it is appalling to wait so long to spend money...............

I agree regarding tips. Funny, the look on peoples faces when you dont tip them eh!
They dont seem so helpful then do they.....
They`re all your friends when they think they`ll be getting some money from you.

... and they don't get any from ME, either, because ... let's face it, I imagine flight attendants are well-enough paid as it is; plus they're in the relatively unique position of being able to fly all over the world - as one of the perks of their job!
