but I had the chance to live in Japan under scholarship and studied Japanese, good enough to get around, communicate and read the Hiragana/Katakana but that's more than a decade, so I am a bit rusty now

Japanese has Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji (even Japanese will have to study hard to know all these characters - almost the same as Chinese).
