... it's perfectly acceptable for you to apply for your spouse visa before having your passport amended; indeed [as I also implied] it makes total sense (cost-wise) ... with the present passport being valid until 2014! There's plenty of time (and opportunity) to have it updated once you're in the UK, believe me!
