I've spoken to my insurers, Columbus Direct and Nationwide my Credit Card company. I've also contacted my Hotel in Manila.

As things stand I have not abandoned my plans and am trying to get another flight over the next few days.

I got a surprisingly good response from Columbus, they said their underwriters, The Professional Travel Insurance Company Ltd are treating it as a weather related event, not an Act of God and would not try to use small print to wriggle out of paying claims.

Columbus said that they would compensate me at £25 for each full 12 hours of my delay, plus they would refund in full any losses on internal flights and hotels.

Not bad for an annual worldwide multi trip policy costing £28.99 on moneysupermarket.com

Best Western Hotel in Manila were also very understanding, they have said that they will not be charging the card I used to secure my booking with.

Nationwide on the other hand were unhelpful, they said their policy was that customers would have to seek refunds from the airlines and hoteliers.

As things stand, I haven't lost any money yet, assuming I can get another flight by Sunday and make my connection to Tacloban on Monday afternoon.

Will keep you posted on how I get on.
