the longest traveling time i had from manchester to manila door to door was over 23 hrs !!

i have been to tacloban and leyte 4 times and because it is more provincial than the city of manila you will enjoy the area.
where in tacloban are you going as my wife is from there but she arrived here in UK 2 weeks ago.
where are you in the UK
i found a site on the web from a girl married to an american who has documented all the places they visit in philippines including a photo section devoted to tacloban. i will find the site address and give to you later

walesrob -i have a good tacloban map but wondered what to expect as i have never been quite that far away before. only ventured as far as europe and most of that was when i was a kid!!

jenny has told me most of waht i know and the rests been of the net.

anyone recommend any good food places or hotels i can take jenny on a modest budget.
and any places worth visiting?

i personaly fancy some scuba as i haev never done it before.

also it it worth car hire or is it not really worth it or spoil the experience?

Hi Richard,

If your on a budget, then I would recommend - if you don't mind the noise of traffic - either Hotel D'Angelo or Manhattan Inn, both in Rizal Avenue, in the city centre. Prices are good - between 500 - 900 pesos per night depending on room size. If your after a quieter life, try the Tacloban Plaza in J Romauldez Street, again prices are 400 - 900 peso a night depending on room size. Word of warning: if its European standard of luxury you want in hotels, I can recommend Alejandros in P. Paterno Street. Some nice restaurants in Tacloban Giuseppe's Italian Food, opposite the hospital, and Stephanies, not sure where it is - ask at the hotel. Alejandros also have a really nice restaurant.

Car Hire - forget it! Hire a car and a driver for the day.

Places to visit - Macarthur Memorial in nearby Candahug; Sohoton Caves; The Japan Madonna; take a walk up Cavarly Hill; Joseph Price Mansion. Take a look at this wikipedia article - it has it all:

yes the flight is a killer, only other thing what got to me , the first time i went was the poverty of parts of manila i went to, but its people are as friendly and beautiful as its country..
oh lack of street lights, decent water supply and the heat

lol, but your'll have a great time, wish i could get away from rain swept Manchester...

Rob, Stephanies is about 50 yards along from Guiseppes on the same parade of shops.

Hi Richard, the first surprise you will have is at the airport in Tacloban........ it is so small and there is a huge rush when the Luggage carts come in...... just let the crowds grab theirs whilst watching out for your own.

You'll have a great time, Tacloban is a bit shabby but lots of good people there. If you prefer a better room to stay in, try the "pool" bungalows at the Leyte Park a bit pricey but worth it.

I shall be over there in the next couple of weeks to collect my wife who is from Tacloban, for hotels i would suggest the Alejandro there is a nice very small jazz bar opposite with a friendly atmosphere the food at guseppies is good too also try the floating restaurant near to leyte park hotel for a good meal in a romantic setting
for beaches i thought it worth going over the bridge to Samar then south to jasmine beach, crystal clear water and not commercialised
and if you decide to tie the knot over there at some time i can put you in touch with a wedding organiser in Tacloban who has all the contacts to make things go smoothly

I would get your lady to make a telephone reservation. They normally have plenty of vacancies, but the best rooms tend to be booked first. For some reason Alejandros don't have an email address, or at least I cant find one; their old Yahoo address is not accepting emails

i was going to take enough for the first week and then get my dad to western union me more when my wages come in.

Its a requirement when passing Philippine Passport control to prove you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay. The reality is, it is never enforced, but yes, certainly flash that Visa card just in case.

As for Tacloban places to eat, Guiseppes and Stephanies are highly recommended, they are both located opposite the hospital. Also try the Ritz, not sure where it is, ask one of the locals when you get there. Alejandros have an excellent restaraunt as well, with classy surrondings.

The first time i went the passport control lady asked when i was leaving and i said the leaving date and showed my return ticket. I won't worry about it much as its just one of those rules they have to have, partly because the western countries do it their people.

The funny thing is,I am in the application process for an R.P residence visa and now I must "give evidence of self support" as they do not want me being "reliant on public resourses" !!!

My wife is from Leyte and she has been to Tacloban but I haven't. However I've travelled the length of Leyte by bus from San Isidro via Hilongos and then onto Padre Burgos in the South.

I can't comment on the diving in the north of Leyte but there's diving at a German place in Hilongos and fantastic diving in Sogod bay in the South.
However, the best diving is over on Malapascua, a boat ride from San Isidro.
That's where I learned to dive and it's brilliant.

When we get our house fixed up in Hilongos we've lots of friends who want to come out diving!!

Yes of course they do!!

The way to get it is to borrow a baby and smother it and yourself in soot.
Then you are required to sit on the pavement and use any kind of small tin to recieve your "resources" directly from the "public"..
