Well the human rights fools will say yes, it's their car they can do what they want, but what about the rights of non-smokers in the car, we know passive smoking can kill, and vehicles are small enclosed areas. But more importantly is it not a safety issue when they are driving? If anyone can find any research on this publish it here please.

I remember my step-father making me inhale his second hand smoke, when I was 10 years old. If I opened the window, he would tell me to close it, or if I complained he'd tell me to shut up. So yeah, I'm in favour of banning smoking in cars, but in the real world, it just wouldn't work. Making children inhale smoke in the same manner as happened to me would be regarded these days as child abuse, but back in the 70's, it was normal. I absolutely detest smokers; they are selfish as they risk the health of others. I have no sympathy when I see a crowd of smokers shivering in the rain outside a pub. No one can seriously doubt that passive smoking is a hazard to health, but Keith's question was actually whether smoking is a safety issue while driving
Lighting up or holding a cigarette while driving is clearly a distraction, along with loud music, trying to read maps, inserting cassette or CD, tuning the radio, eating and drinking, or allowing the front seat passenger to perform certain acts on the driver
If any such distraction is coupled with bad driving it could lead to a charge of careless driving. If it leads to an accident, even death, then the charge will be dangerous driving. There is evidence that concentration is important in preventing accidents and common sense surely supports this. Whether lighting up and smoking is any worse than the other distractions mentioned is debatable.
Yes ...in principle ... for the [obvious] reasons that others have already mentioned. But ...
... if a driver wishes to light-up when he/she is ALONE in his/her vehicle, then surely that is a matter of personal choice... so long as he/she exercises due care and attention while doing so ... and, in the process, is not distracted to the extent of being a danger to other road users.
i think this thing is a matter of behavior, right manners and consideration to others..i hate it when i pass by people which is smoking coz the smell will stick thru your clothes no matter how u try to avoid it..i have friends and officemates who do smoke, but when we non-smokers are inside their car or even just near them, they are the ones who choose not to light a cigarette and smoke inside the car, or they try to get away as far as possible from us that we wont be able to inhale the nasty smoke from their cigs..they are the ones who feel embarrassed if they do so..

... I think *that's being a bit harsh; I mean, selfishness can "cut BOTH ways" in this argument. Surely the fairest - and most sensible - solution would be to create separate Smoking & Non-Smoking Areas in pubs, clubs and the like. Whatever happened to individuals' rights to freedom of choice, for goodness sake?

It's unfair, unsightly ... not to mention morally degrading ... and could SO easily be resolved if licensing authorities were given powers to provide separate facilities catering for smokers and non-smokers alike ... instead of EVERYONE being forced to pander to the dictates of Central Government bureaucracy in its attempts to create a 'Nanny State'.

If anything I think it makes you a safer driver, when you smoke they always seem to have a window open so more fresh air coming into the car preventing nodding off behind the wheel.
If you knock the tip of the ciggie off on the indicator stalk it really makes you alert while trying to avoid burning your nether regions.
Never seen an accident caused by smoking...all the other things,sat nav, radio tuning, mobile phones, sex, have.
GB was really great when we were a nation of smokers, when you was working you would have a smoke break and lots of work problems would be thought out and resolved. We were happier, you would just say to any problem,SOD IT lets go and have a smoke. Most of the great thinkers were pipe smokers.
The west has gone backwards since the drive against smoking, whereas the countries of lots of smokers,China etc , have thrived.
My wife smokes about 5 cigs a day but never in the car and I used to smoke 40 to 50 a day and stopped 23 years ago and now weigh 3 stone more. I know the health issues have been proved but

Hi all,
I know this is not sticking to the topic but just my view on smoking in general.
I was brought up in a smoking household, both mum and dad smoked and it just seemed normal.
I tried a cigarette when I first started work when I had my first wage packet, and did not like it and have never smoked since.
I have no objection to anyone smoking as long as it’s not around me!
My flat is a non smoking one that if anyone comes here they go outside to smoke, and it is the same with my car, if a passenger wants to smoke we stop and they get out.

Its a bit like our old building van on the way home from work. If anyone complained about the smoke we would simply pull over..to the nearest taxi rank,and let them out.

What Fred said happened to me once, a few years ago.
I was asked by my manager to give one of my colleagues a lift to one of the county shows downsouth, to save petrol money, ie expenses....
After less than ten miles from leaving the office I lit up and was confronted by a barrage of abuse from my colleague, all along the passive smoking lark and trying to suffocate him and deny him his human rights, bla, blah, blah....
So as the good samaritan I am, I went up the next exit on my route, which incidentally was junction 19 of the M6, southbound, and left him with his luggage by the side of the roundabout.
I never had a rollicking about it and never been asked again to give lifts....

My friend lit a cigarette in his kayak and set fire to it , proving that you can't have your kayak and heat it
when growing up there was only me and my mum out of 15 not smoking , so can you imagine what we took in, hate then stuff but each to there own , no one smokes in my car or home , but if i am going into others cars and home then i have to accept it
